Folklore often hears: "From his grandfather's life to his father's life/ The rainbow appears on Son Cha, without wind it rains", or "In the afternoon, clouds cover Son Cha/ Waves roar on Non Nuoc, rain falls on Vung Thung".

Towering Son Tra

Son Cha is majestic and imposing, connecting a long sandbank deposited by waves and wind, protecting Vung Thung. “I heard gunshots and suddenly/ Oh no, the French occupied Vung Thung yesterday”.

On the morning of May 1, 1858, R. de Genouilly commanded the French-Spanish Fleet to land on Son Cha Peninsula to establish a headquarters. On September 1, 1858, De Genouilly sent an ultimatum forcing the governor of Da Nang to surrender the city within two hours. But without waiting for a reply, the allied artillery concentrated on firing hundreds of rounds at the mouth of the Han River and the forts on Son Cha Peninsula.

According to Professor Tran Van Giau, after 5 months of fighting, the French-Spanish coalition only occupied an uninhabited mountain and a few coastal villages. They did not dare to advance further...

They expected a rebellion of the Nam-Ngai people as promised by the French missionaries, but it did not happen. During that dilemma, the invading army suffered from illness and many deaths, not because of guns and bullets, but because of the climate. Food was very difficult to find, medicine was not enough, and occasionally the Vietnamese army came to attack and shoot at them...

Beaten, hungry, and in pain, two years later, on March 23, 1860, R. de Genouilly packed up and boarded a ship, burned everything, leaving at the foot of Son Cha mountain a church and a "hill of remains" burying 1,500 soldiers' corpses - the humiliated souls. And the criminals were the ones who plotted and gave the orders - they would be punished. The tomb and the corpses without incense were a warning to anyone who dared to violate and insult the sacred mountain!

Sacred Echoes from the Mountain

On January 7, 1947, the French sent a force to attack the west of Da Nang. On April 8, 1947, the Da Nang Executive Committee was established with Nguyen Ngoc Chan as Secretary. The Executive Committee was based on Son Cha Mountain, consisting of 3 parts: The Standing Department on the mountain - Dien An base, working daily. The Reserve Department was located on the top of the mountain - Mot Cu - Moscow. And the department at the foot of the mountain.

A unit of the Special Service with 15 soldiers, commanded by Nguyen Huu Khoan (Da), directly followed the inner city. Due to the large number of people evacuated, the city was deserted at this time. To strengthen the resistance leadership, on August 5, 1947, the Da Nang Executive Committee held a Conference in Dien An.

The conference analyzed the situation and pointed out that the enemy not only plotted to build Da Nang into a large military base, but they also wanted to turn Da Nang into a strategic stronghold for the entire Central - Indochina region... The conference decided to move the Thanh Executive Committee from Son Cha to the Han River.

After the Lunar New Year of the Fire Monkey, 1955, from Hanoi, Tu Thuan (Truong Chi Cuong), then Deputy Head of the North-South Relations Department, assigned Nguyen Tri Quang the task of researching and establishing a sea route to transport people, documents and goods from Vinh Linh across the 17th Parallel to Trung Man - Hoa Vang and vice versa.

In early 1957, following the policy of the Provincial Party Committee, a boat team named "Song Da Fishing Group" was assigned the task of taking cadres who stayed after 1954, who were sick, exhausted, and had difficulty staying long-term, along with many cadres, party members, and bases who were no longer legally capable, across the sea to the North for medical treatment and study. Combining the transfer of goods, C2 - the transport unit in Vinh Moc - took Tran Nhanh and Nguyen Duy Hung (Sau Hung) from Bom No cave on the edge of Son Cha mountain, down the boat to Vinh Linh.

On March 8, 1965, the American ship with its mouth open entered Vung Thung, docked at Xuan Thieu port, the American marines landed on Nam O land, flew helicopters to occupy Son Cha peak, built a radar station - people called it the divine eye that could see 300km away - a radar looking out...

The fragments of history left Son Cha, in the middle of the blue sky mountains, from the top, looking at the immense sea. Listening to the sacred echoes from the mountains, from the souls, suddenly remembering someone's words, that: The great men of the past only remain in the mounds of earth, if their heroic deeds are not recorded by their descendants...
