Over the past few days, the chrysanthemum growing area in Nghia Hiep commune, Tu Nghia district, Quang Ngai province has been quite busy. Traders are purchasing flowers to send to many provinces and cities to sell during Tet.
This year, people in Nghia Hiep commune planted about 500,000 pots of chrysanthemums for Tet. This is the largest chrysanthemum growing area for Tet in the Central region.
Mr. Nguyen Thang, Nghia Hiep commune, planted 1,000 pots of chrysanthemums. Mr. Thang's chrysanthemums bloomed evenly and beautifully, right on Tet holiday, so they were all ordered by traders.
According to Mr. Thang, this year the cold rain has lasted for a long time, so flower growers have to keep the lights on longer than usual. On the other hand, to make the flowers grow well, they need to increase the amount of fertilizer. Meanwhile, the price of agricultural materials has increased, so the cost of growing flowers has increased.
“The weather is unfavorable, but people have experience so the flowers still bloom in time for Tet. However, this year, the cost of growing flowers is 15% to 20% higher than previous years,” Mr. Thang said.
According to Mr. Thang, traders came to the garden to see the flowers and paid a deposit half a month ago. The flowers he bought were brought to Da Nang city.
Mr. Nguyen Tuan Anh's garden has 1,300 pots of chrysanthemums. Mr. Anh grows chrysanthemums in pots with diameters of 50-70cm. These flowers are sold to traders at prices ranging from 140,000 VND to 220,000 VND per pot.
Larger pots will have higher prices. For example, a pot with a diameter of 1m is sold to traders for 1-1.2 million VND.
According to Mr. Anh, most people grow flowers in 50-70cm pots. These pots are affordable for most people. Larger pots cost millions of dong, so gardeners only grow them in small quantities.
“Growing chrysanthemums is very labor-intensive, requires techniques and a lot of fertilizer. Selling each pot for 140,000 VND only brings in a profit of about 50,000 VND. After 4 months of care, the chrysanthemum garden brings in about 60 million VND for my family,” Mr. Anh shared.
Ms. Nguyen Thi Nguyet Nga bought 500 pots of chrysanthemums to sell in Quang Ngai city. This year, the chrysanthemums have many flowers and bloom evenly, so Ms. Nga hopes to sell them all.
According to Ms. Nga, traders have to spend money on transportation and renting space, so the price of flowers to consumers will be double the price of buying them at the garden. However, traders only make a profit if all the flowers are sold.
“If there are still flowers near Tet, the price must be reduced. Some years, we have to accept a loss to sell all the flowers,” Ms. Nga shared.
