Pham Thi Kim Ngoc Anh (born 2005, residing in Binh Chanh District, Ho Chi Minh City) was born and raised with many losses and deprivations. When Anh was 4 years old, her father died of a stroke. Anh's mother worked hard alone to raise her daughter.
But not long after, Anh’s mother was tortured by the terrible blood cancer. Despite her illness, Anh’s mother still had to work hard to earn money for treatment and to provide enough meals for her child every day.
Difficulties piled on top of difficulties, her mother's pain increased, the cost of treatment increased... making Anh's mother unable to cope any longer. All expenses at that time had to rely on the support of relatives and the little money her mother had saved when she was still healthy. After a period of struggling, Ngoc Anh's mother passed away.
For the 12-year-old girl at that time, orphaned by both parents, life was difficult in every way. The little girl had to rely on her elderly uncle's small business at the market.
Understanding her own situation, outside of school time, Ngoc Anh always helps her uncle with everything from cooking, cleaning the house, doing laundry to bringing goods to the market and helping sell.
By 2020, due to the pandemic and the increasingly difficult life, her uncle moved to another place to live, leaving Ngoc Anh alone. Lacking the love of her parents and the care of her relatives, Anh grew up on her own, taking care of herself and worrying about life.
To earn money for living and studying, I went to school and worked many different jobs such as warehouse duty, restaurant assistant... There were times when I worked as a night guard from 6pm to 6am the next morning, leaving early and having to go to school immediately.
Human strength has its limits, and Ngoc Anh often collapsed on the table and fell asleep. Her teachers loved her and kept telling her to work less, stay healthy, and take her graduation exams, and go to university to have hope of changing her life.
" I don't want to drop out of school because I see many people who drop out of school don't develop," Ngoc Anh confided.
Knowing Anh's situation, many teachers and friends called on parents to sponsor her to help and support her so she could study with peace of mind.
Despite difficult circumstances, Ngoc Anh always tried hard to study, for 12 consecutive years she was an excellent student and always had a burning dream of going to university.
" I just hope for a miracle so I can continue to go to school. Later, when I have a job, I can support myself and repay those who raised me... ", Ngoc Anh said.
Due to circumstances, unable to "be taken care of", Anh chose to "take care of" others. Therefore, she chose to study Nursing after graduating from high school.
" I grew up with a mother who was seriously ill, so I understand the value of caring for the sick. I want to pursue a career in Nursing so I can care for and help many patients," Anh confided.
However, with her circumstances, Anh knew that studying at university - especially in Nursing - would not be easy. Because Anh knew that the university program was very heavy, if she did not put all her effort into studying, the results would not be as expected.
" I was mentally prepared to continue studying and working, but paying for university tuition on my own was too much for me. During the time preparing for the graduation exam and choosing a university to attend, I learned that Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology (HUTECH) had a full scholarship policy for poor and orphaned students. Many teachers also advised me to choose this school," Anh said.
Finally, the wish of a female student with special circumstances was fulfilled when HUTECH University agreed to award her a Relay scholarship worth 100% of the full tuition fee.
" When I was in high school, I researched many schools and learned that HUTECH had a full scholarship policy for poor and orphaned students. After receiving advice from teachers, I decided to apply ," Ngoc Anh said.
Dr. Nguyen Quoc Anh - Vice Principal of HUTECH said that, given Ngoc Anh's particularly difficult circumstances, the school has considered and decided to award her a full scholarship worth 100% of her tuition for the entire course, with an annual maintenance score of only 2.0/4.0.
" I hope this will be an encouragement for you to be able to study with peace of mind and confidently fulfill your future dreams," said Mr. Quoc Anh.
