Herniated disc due to incorrect gym exercise
Recently, the pain increased so T. went to the Ho Chi Minh City Orthopedic and Rehabilitation Hospital (Hospital 1A) for examination. The patient had lower back pain spreading to the buttocks and both legs, numbness in both legs, pain when bending forward, unable to sit for long periods of time while studying due to pain and fatigue, and unable to participate in recreational sports activities.
On May 19, Dr. Calvin Q Trinh, Head of the musculoskeletal correction unit, Hospital 1A, said that combined with special clinical examination positions, it showed an anterior rotation of the pelvis, hip deviation, and changes in the physiological curve of the cervical and lumbar spine.
After 3 sessions of musculoskeletal adjustment, the patient felt much better, could sit in class with less pain and fatigue, performed daily activities more easily and had more energy.
Lifting weights incorrectly can be harmful to bones and joints.
Similarly, male patient NHĐ (56 years old) has been in the habit of exercising at the gym for nearly 10 years with regular frequency with difficult and heavy exercises such as weightlifting and dumbbells. After each workout, Mr. Đ. felt pain in his back and neck and went to buy medicine because he thought he had muscle pain after exercising. In early 2023, Mr. Đ. went to a physical therapy clinic in Ho Chi Minh City and was diagnosed with cervical and lumbar disc herniation. After a period of treatment, the improvement in his condition was slow and not promising.
In May 2023, Mr. D. had a dull pain in his neck and the numbness appeared more and more, the pain in his lumbar region gradually increased and spread to his buttocks, leading to difficulty in daily activities due to numbness in his legs and arms. Due to the inconvenience in his daily life, Mr. D. went to Hospital 1A for treatment with musculoskeletal adjustment method.
The patient had a "flat back" and a deviated side after a period of incorrect gym training.
Dr. Calvin said that through examination, he found a "flat back" with no physiological curve in the thoracic and lumbar spine, a posteriorly rotated and asymmetrical pelvis, stiff back muscles, and dull pain in the neck, shoulders, and lower back. After the first treatment session, the patient did not feel much due to the high intensity of the previous gym sessions. But starting the third treatment session, the patient felt a clear change in the lumbar muscles compared to before, accompanied by gradually decreasing pain, feeling more comfortable in daily activities and work, and having more energy.
Rejuvenation of patients with herniated discs
According to Dr. Calvin, previous statistics show that herniated disc disease often appears in middle age. The cause is often due to the aging process, degeneration combined with long working hours, overwork, heavy lifting, leading to damage to the disc and spine.
Nowadays, the age of patients with disc herniation is even very young due to the changing nature of work and life: office work, using computers, phones, sitting a lot, standing a lot, long-standing bad posture habits and laziness. But if you exercise too much continuously and incorrectly, it is also a new cause leading to disc herniation and is becoming more and more common.
