Thai Nguyen female student organizes free English class for children in mountainous areas

Witnessing many children in mountainous areas having to put their studies on hold to work, support their families' finances and not having many opportunities to pursue vast knowledge or see the world, Hoang Kim Ngan determined to nurture her dream to find a way out of this vicious cycle.

Growing up in the countryside (Binh Son mountainous commune, Thai Nguyen province) - where the need to study often has to give way to worries about making a living, Hoang Kim Ngan has gone through a difficult journey to achieve the academic achievements she has today.

At the age of 15, Ngan left her hometown for Hanoi to study at FPT High School thanks to a scholarship. Here, Ngan not only achieved excellent academic results but also found a passion for community activities and honed her leadership skills.

As President of the FSchool English Club , she helped “revive” the club, increasing the number of members from 30 to 85 and, together with the group, winning the “Best Club” award in the school. Ngan also coordinated the organization of the school’s annual English Festival for three consecutive years, attracting 6,000 participants and fostering a vibrant community of young people who love English.

However, it was her experiences in her hometown that gave Ngan a desire for the future. She co-founded the project “English for a Better Future” to organize free English classes for students in her hometown in Binh Son commune, as well as several communes in Meo Vac district, Ha Giang province.

“I hope that these English classes will open up opportunities for students to learn new things and be exposed to global thinking, just like I did,” Ngan shared.

The initiative has had a significant impact, engaging more than 400 children in five communes and providing more than 330 lessons. The initiative has also been covered by the press and received a certificate of merit from the Meo Vac District Department of Education and Training.

Ngan’s commitment to community development does not stop there. She wants to help parents support their children’s dreams and address the root cause of many children dropping out of school early: family financial hardship.

Recognizing the opportunity for sustainable economic development in her hometown community, Ngan decided to co-found the Envietra project with her high school friends. Envietra is a social business project that aims to empower the community through sustainable tourism, by connecting homestay accommodations and local people to provide high-quality services.

The project has connected with more than 2,000 households, partnered with more than 20 homestay facilities and created jobs for many households in mountainous provinces. With an innovative approach to community development, the project helped Ngan and her teammates win second prize in the 2023 National Innovative Solutions Competition organized by JA Vietnam with the support of HSBC.

During her high school years, her passion for interacting with friends from all over the world prompted Ngan to participate in international exchange programs with schools and organizations in Japan, Singapore and New Zealand.

Now, as she prepares to begin her journey at RMIT with a full scholarship, Ngan plans to major in Global Business with two minors: Logistics and Supply Chain, and Business and Technology.

“I hope that the specialized knowledge I have accumulated will help me carry out the application development plan for Envietra and call for more partners to join the chain,” Ngan said.

Ngan's story not only revolves around her personal achievements but is also a source of inspiration for young people who dare to dream.

“After 3 years of living independently in Hanoi, I have achieved things beyond my imagination. I have found the passion that has always been with me. I hope that young people will have big aspirations, no matter what their circumstances are, they can all reach their dreams,” Ngan shared.
