The two scholarships to study in the US that Nguyen Ngoc Tra My has just received are from Rochester University (top 47 US universities) with a scholarship of 5 billion VND and Fordham University (top 89 US universities) with a scholarship of 5.4 billion VND.
Dream of becoming a financial analyst
When asked why she majored in English but chose finance, a major far from her major, My confided: "For me, English was my passion when I was young, but I would not choose to study and pursue it. Therefore, instead of choosing to study languages, I want to become a financial analyst because I myself have a passion for mathematics and numbers. Moreover, America is the brain of world finance, here I will have the best learning and practice environment."

To make her dream come true, My went online to research. After determining that American universities not only consider scholarships based on achievements, IELTS and SAT certificates, but also extracurricular activities and essays, My carefully planned to implement it.
Accordingly, My has actively participated in community activities such as: donating money and clothes to patients in difficult circumstances; teaching English and participating in organizing the Mid-Autumn Festival for disabled children at the Phu Yen Center for Supporting the Development of Inclusive Education, participating in donating charity kitchens to patients at Phu Yen General Hospital. At the same time, participating in English exams to consolidate her achievements.
To realize her dream, since grade 9, My achieved IELTS 8.0 quite easily. However, the SAT test was a challenge for My because there was no local training center, which made My extremely worried and encountered many difficulties.

Determined to pursue her goal, in 11th grade, My went online to learn and register for an online SAT course, practice solving questions, and achieved a score of 1,530/1,600. At the same time, My spent half a year completing an essay introducing herself and her contributions to society.
Sweet fruit after all the effort
The good news came in mid-December 2023, when My received a congratulatory letter for receiving scholarships from Rochester and Fordham Universities. Sharing her joy with her family and teachers, My said that she will study abroad in the US next fall.
"I am really happy because all my efforts have paid off. After graduating from high school, I will choose to study finance at the University of Rochester. Although Fordham University's finance major is ranked higher (ranked 15th) than Rochester's (ranked 17th), and Fordham's scholarship is also higher, Rochester is my first choice. Rochester's environment is really suitable for me; moreover, I can change my major if I feel it is no longer suitable for my finances," My shared.
My also confided that although she has no clear plans after 4 years of university, she wants to return to Vietnam to contribute and work. My said: "Vietnam's financial market is really vibrant now. It is a good environment for young people to compete and grow. The important thing is to contribute to the country."

Mr. Huynh Tan Chau, Principal of Luong Van Chanh High School for the Gifted (Phu Yen), also could not hide his joy: "The day My announced that she had received scholarships from two American universities, I was truly happy for her. After all her tireless efforts, this is the achievement she deserves. The next 4 years of university in the US will be a time for her to both study and practice, challenging herself. I hope that in the future, she will make more outstanding progress in her studies and research, worthy of being an excellent student of Luong Van Chanh High School for the Gifted."
