Ta Ngoc Minh Chau, a fourth-year student of the Faculty of Applied Sciences (Ho Chi Minh City National University), has spent a lot of time researching the potential of magnesium alloys as biocompatible, biodegradable materials for use in the production of braces and screws in orthopedic trauma.

Nowadays, people are very susceptible to musculoskeletal injuries during their daily lives, work, accidents or sports injuries. In cases where preservation is not possible, surgery is the method of choice.

Currently, most of the nails, plates and screws used in orthopedic surgery are made of stainless steel or titanium, have high mechanical strength and are proven suitable for fixing broken bones.

However, after the bone heals, the patient needs to undergo further surgery to remove these implants.

According to Minh Chau, magnesium alloys, in addition to having mechanical properties suitable for orthopedic surgery, are also biodegradable. This means that after completing the task of bone fixation, the magnesium alloy will self-degrade, eliminating the need for a second surgery.

“Based on the articles and studies the team collected, the team developed this project to evaluate the potential of magnesium alloys and identify weaknesses that require further research on this material.

The goal is to enrich the material portfolio, increase choices for doctors and medical professionals and benefit patients," said Minh Chau.

In addition to this topic, Minh Chau also researched and designed a multi-spectral imaging system using visible and infrared light to assess the condition of food. In the project, Minh Chau was responsible for designing the imaging system, programming the control of 200 LED bulbs, managing the imaging system, processing and analyzing food samples.

Each step of completion brings this female student the joy of conquering each step of medical science research. Each research achievement for her is an important milestone, demonstrating her personal development in this field.

Not only passionate about medical research, Minh Chau also actively participates in organizations related to protecting community health such as charity running events to raise funds for cancer patients, participating in blood donation...

Minh Chau said that her goal does not stop at self-development. She wants to build a career that brings useful values to society.

She hopes to play an important role in leading new technology projects, promoting innovation and actively participating in training activities, inspiring the younger generation to pursue a career in science and technology, especially science and technology related to public health protection.

Ta Ngoc Minh Chau was awarded the 2024 Vietnam Female Science and Technology Student Award organized by the Central Committee of the Ho Chi Minh Communist Youth Union in coordination with the Ministry of Science and Technology.
