Chloe Tan was born in Singapore and grew up in Shanghai, China. Chloe comes from an intellectual family, her mother is a bank employee, her father works in biotechnology. Her family is well-off, so her parents sent her to an international school from grade 2.
"I feel privileged because I grew up in a comfortable environment. This gave me a head start compared to my friends. But I need to work harder," Chloe shared.
Chloe, aware of the need to work, started her own business when she was in high school. In 2016, she received an offer to help her younger brother prepare for a debate competition. As a result, a few students joined Chloe's tutoring classes each week to improve their studies.
After that, the girl's mother advised her to become a tutor to earn extra income. Chloe tutors mainly 12-17 year old students in China who aim to take the International Baccalaureate program to apply for scholarships to study abroad after graduating from high school.
While studying and tutoring, Chloe spends 2 nights/week preparing lesson plans and 5-6 hours/week teaching. Chloe's teaching schedule is on Friday nights and the cost is about 67 USD/hour/student (1.6 million VND). "Each of my classes lasts 2 hours compared to 1-1 tutoring or direct teaching, teaching online helps me save travel time. The inconvenience is probably the time difference between Shanghai and Chicago," Chloe said.
Tutoring has become a part of Chloe's life and routine for her four years at university. Tutoring for many years means she has little time to hang out with friends. However, Chloe says she doesn't regret it.
To balance her time, Chloe spends 3 nights studying, 2 nights preparing lesson plans, 1 night teaching, and the remaining time entertaining or meeting friends. Maintaining this habit for many years as a student, Chloe has a stable income. At the age of 21, the female student earns 55,770 USD/year (1.3 billion VND) from tutoring. Previously, in 2021, Chloe earned about 93,000 USD/year (2.2 billion VND).
In addition to tutoring, Chloe also earns $30,838 a year from producing videos for YouTube. Her internship also brings in $6,720 a year. By the time she turns 27, she hopes to have saved $300,000 to buy a house or start her own business.
Chloe is currently a graduate of the University of Chicago (USA), hoping to find a job as a product manager for a technology company. Chloe said that working in the STEM field (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) will make it easier to get a work visa at a large company in the US.
