Australia Maisy Grierson, 13, is the youngest person to be accepted into a Psychology degree at Curtin University.

Normally, Australian universities only allow students to enrol in Psychology when they are 16 years old. Curtin University does not have this rule, so Maisy was able to enrol in the second semester of last year, when she turned 13. Maisy is one of the 12 youngest students at the university.

She will study two credits online each semester because Curtin University requires students to be 15 years old to study directly at the school. At the same time, the female student continues to complete the high school program.

“The hardest part is scheduling all the homework and tests, knowing when to study and how far in advance. The rest is just fun,” says Maisy.

The girl has skipped grades twice. The first time was from kindergarten to pre-primary school, the second time from 7th to 8th grade. After realizing that school was not suitable for her, Maisy switched to homeschooling, under the guidance of her mother, a high school teacher. Studying ahead of the general curriculum but wanting to challenge herself, she set a goal of going to university, pursuing a major in Criminal Psychology.

"It's a challenge, but she needs a challenge. Maisy thrives when given something to do," Maisy's mother shared.

Although she won’t be in class, Maisy hopes to work more in groups next year and meet other students face-to-face. Her plan is to graduate at 18 and then study Criminology.

Curtin is one of five universities in Perth, Western Australia (WA). It is the only university in WA that accepts students under the age of 15. Last year, it enrolled 97 14-year-olds and 12 13-year-olds.

Students under 18 are allowed to study at university in Australia but need to submit written consent from a parent or guardian. Open Universities Australia says three universities in the country – Curtin, Adelaide and New England – admit students aged 13-14, depending on the course. Other universities accept students aged 15-17. Only the Australian National University and Australian Catholic University require students to be 18 or older.
