Female author Le Pham Minh Khue has just released her debut work called Su's Home.
Hope to spread many messages
At the launch of her debut work on May 30, Minh Khue said she started writing bilingual books 2 years ago, in 2022. The story was inspired by Su - a pet dog raised by her relatives, thereby conveying many meaningful messages about family affection and love for animals. "I want to borrow the words of a dog so that readers will find it more interesting and easier to empathize with," the female student shared.
According to Khue, using role-playing techniques, the book recounts important milestones, full of emotions in the first 3 years of the dog Su's life, and describes the life of an animal-loving family in Can Tho. The book consists of 12 chapters, printed in 1,000 copies and published by Ho Chi Minh City General Publishing House. Of which, Khue donated 50 books to libraries in remote areas and 100 books to the school she is attending.
As a member of the Royal Society of Arts and Principal of Vinschool Grand Park, Mr. Robert Davies commented that Su's Shelter has "beautiful vocabulary and rich images". "The book is not only a chronicle of a dog's life, but also a powerful testament to the enduring power of love and the indomitable spirit of humanity", said Mr. Davies.
This is clearly shown through the sentences written by Khue. For example, when talking about the "origin" of the pet's name, she said that after a while of arguing about choosing "Rice", "Ink" or "Hoa", the whole family agreed to name it "Su", "the name does not have any special meaning, but at least it helps Mrs. Linh (the maid - PV) feel less lonely because she always feels that her grandchild Su is always by her side, easing the longing for her little grandchild who is in Ho Chi Minh City".

Or when talking about the pain of losing her mother, in the role of a dog, she not only talked about the psychological trauma she had to go through, but also unconsciously revealed many feelings, such as missing her father who had disappeared since birth. Then when the "boss" passed away, the descriptive lines from the student also easily made the reader sympathize, because "the atmosphere here was no different from a collapsed tent, just following gravity and sagging".
Not to mention, in the book of less than a hundred pages, Khue also incorporates many viewpoints on social issues. For example, when talking about the fact that mixed-breed dogs "are not respected much", the 11-year-old female student expressed: "I feel like this is like discrimination... Like humans, all dogs, whether purebred or mixed-breed, have equal rights". Or when mentioning the incident, she is optimistic because "everything happens for a reason".
Khue diligently wrote and rewrote everything, then continued to translate the work into English to further spread the story about the 4-legged "member" in families. "Through this story, I also want to inspire my peers to read more books, because in books there are many interesting things for us to learn," the female student shared.
"Many times when I had difficulty arranging ideas, characters and translating them into English, I wanted to give up. But my family and teachers always encouraged and inspired me to strive to complete the path I had chosen," Khue confided, adding that she often reads books about dogs such as The Little Dog Carrying a Basket of Roses (Nguyen Nhat Anh) or books with political, social and historical themes, such as about Mr. Pham Xuan An, Mr. Dang Tran Duc (Ba Quoc)...
Mr. Robert Davies (2nd from left), Principal of Vinschool Grand Park Inter-level School, received 100 Su's Shelter books on behalf of the school.
Open-ended parenting methods
Minh Khue's bilingual book launch at the age of 11 could not have been possible without the support of her parents. Mr. Le Minh Hung, the girl's father, shared that he is also a dog lover. Previously, in the 1980s, he raised a dog and was saved by that dog from the fangs of a poisonous snake. "When I told her the story, Khue gradually developed a love for her four-legged 'friend'," Mr. Hung recalled.
From then on, Khue began to learn about dog breeds such as their names, appearances, and habits, and read touching stories about the loyalty of dogs. She liked Golden Retrievers, Poodles, etc., and wanted to raise a dog like her father. However, because he was worried that his youngest daughter did not have enough necessary preparation, Mr. Hung posed a challenge, "First, write a book about dogs."
And Khue succeeded after 2 years of implementation.
"Throughout the process, I did not force my child to write in a certain way, but only suggested and provided him with necessary documents and advice. Even when it came to translating into English, Khue firmly said that she did not need her parents' support because, 'I am better at this than you, Mom and Dad'. I am very proud that my child has continued my unfinished dreams in her own way," Mr. Hung said, adding that Khue once created a YouTube channel to teach English for free.
Su's Shelter is a meaningful work for children, released on the occasion of International Children's Day 1.6.
According to Mr. Hung, if you suggest the right strengths, put your trust in your children and create motivation through awards and commitments, the child can develop more and more positively. "Create the habit of setting directions for children because if they do not have aspirations and desires, they will be like statues, not knowing where to go. Give your children the environment, encouragement and advice so that they can choose the path they want to take," the male parent shared.
"I don't 'urge' my children to study really well or compete mechanically, the most important thing is what they learn," Mr. Hung added.
Khue's homeroom teacher added that before embarking on writing books, the female student was also the author of many short stories. "After Su's Home , Khue and her classmates are working on a book project for charity purposes, with content revolving around topics that the students love, from family love to fairy tales, fiction and is expected to be published soon," the homeroom teacher said.
