According to 163, in October, Ms. Thuong went to a local bank in Taixing, Jiangsu, China to withdraw the entire amount of 130,000 yuan (about 450 million VND) in her savings account. She had started depositing this money since January this year. The withdrawal deadline came this December. However, despite losing all the interest she could have received at the end of the term, the old lady insisted on withdrawing the money.

Out of curiosity, the female employee asked the old lady why. At first, she did not share any information. The only thing she said was to urge the teller to quickly complete the procedures to receive the money. It was not until the employee expressed a firm attitude and firmly refused to serve that Mrs. Thuong shared her story.

The woman said that the night before, she received a message from her son asking for money. In the chat, the son asked his mother to help him with about 100,000 yuan to prepare for his upcoming wedding. He also promised to pay the money back in 2 months.

However, one thing that made her quite worried was that her son asked to deposit money into several accounts under someone else's name. To be more assured, Ms. Thuong requested a video call to verify.

Her son agreed immediately. However, the call only lasted a few seconds and then ended. Since she had seen her son's face on the video call, she felt reassured. Since she did not have that much money left, she made an appointment to go to the bank tomorrow morning to withdraw the money from her savings account and transfer it at the counter.

Hearing this, the female bank employee was a bit hesitant. She said she had encountered a case where a customer was asked to transfer money to a strange account and then fell into a scam. To be sure, she asked Mrs. Thuong for her son's phone number so she could contact him for verification. However, she refused and asked the bank employee to handle the situation quickly.

Female bank employee helps old lady avoid sophisticated scam

Realizing that she could not stop the customer, the female employee contacted the police to intervene. About 10 minutes after receiving the information, the authorities arrived. Here, the police asked Ms. Thuong to cooperate and provide information about her son.

In front of the old lady, the police contacted the son. Surprisingly, on the other end of the line, this person denied ever asking his mother for money. He was completely unaware of the incident.

Only then did Mrs. Thuong wake up. She thanked the authorities for promptly stopping the robbery and helping her preserve her long-saved money.

Here, the police officer said that her son's social media account had been hacked and the bad guys took advantage of it to commit fraud using Deepfake technology. Accordingly, they used AI to create a fake video of the account owner's face and voice. When asked to make a video call to prove it, they would agree to accept the call but then quickly disconnect to avoid detection.

Police also said that people can recognize Deepfake scam calls with the naked eye. The call time is usually very short, only a few seconds. The image quality is quite poor and unstable. The scammer gives the reason that the connection is unstable to quickly disconnect. The caller's face is often emotionless and unnatural. If you observe carefully, you can detect that the sound will not match the image, and there will be a lot of noise.

Through this incident, the police also advise people to be vigilant, not to provide personal information, bank accounts, money transfer codes and not to transfer money based on a few lines of text messages on social networks. You need to perform other authentication methods such as traditional phone calls or use other communication channels to confirm again.

After the story reached the bank's leadership, the representative proceeded to reward the teller. Her insight and determination helped the elderly customer avoid falling into an extremely sophisticated scam.
