Korean transgender icon
Harisu, whose real name is Lee Kyung Eun (born 1975), is a pioneer in representing the LGBTQ+ community in the media, not only in Korea but also across Asia. She began her entertainment career in 2001, and is known as the first transgender K-pop idol.
Harisu was famous in Korea and Asia in the 2000s.
Harisu was born male. She decided to undergo sex reassignment surgery in 1995 when she was 20 years old. According to Koreaboo , the person who helped her realize her dream of living as her real gender was Kim Seok Kwon – the most successful sex reassignment surgeon in Korea. Since then, Harisu has become the second person in Korea to legally change gender.
In the early 2000s, Harisu came out as transgender despite the conservative Korean society at the time. Not only for herself, Harisu also took on the responsibility of advocating for the rights of the LGBTQ+ community, and openly shared her experiences to help others better understand transgender people.
In the media, Harisu confided that living in a male body when she knew she was a woman from a young age was a painful experience, and could even kill her if something was not done.
“If I had lived as a man without having sex reassignment surgery, I would have died. I am a woman except for my genitals. I don’t want to live an awkward life with those genitals. I am a woman, so I want to live as a woman,” she said.

In 2003, Harisu left her management company TTM Entertainment and began a long legal battle over the rights to her stage name, Harisu. The court eventually ruled in her favor.
