After 2 days, the name Shi Ming is still hot on Chinese social networking sites. "Thirteenth Sister", "Female version of Wong Fei Hung", "Female Chinese Medicine Boxer"... are the nicknames of Shi Ming. Recently, she was referred to by a longer title: "Female doctor who treats patients during the day and beats people to the hospital at night".
Thach Minh just won a spectacular victory in a match worth 50 thousand USD (about 1.2 billion VND) when she delivered a knockout blow that sent her opponent to the hospital. The detail that has attracted the attention of the Chinese online community is Thach Minh's identity outside the ring. Her main occupation is a therapist, specializing in acupuncture and massage.

Female doctor knows how to fight
Shi Ming's nickname "Thirteenth Sister" is a reference to the character in the films about the Chinese martial arts legend Wong Fei Hung. She is also called "the female version of Wong Fei Hung" because she is good at both martial arts and medicine. Shi Ming is studying traditional medicine at Yunnan University and is about to graduate. Her maternal grandfather was a doctor, while Shi Ming's father was a martial artist.
Looking at Shi Ming's usual appearance, no one would recognize her as one of China's rising female MMA (mixed martial arts) fighters. Shi Ming, who practices at the hospital, usually doesn't wear makeup, wears 3-diopter glasses, and is considered a quiet, shy person.
However, this seemingly "nerdy" girl completely changed when she entered the martial arts arena. Thach Minh even knew martial arts before studying medicine. Since the age of 13, Thach Minh practiced Tai Chi, then learned some other subjects such as taekwondo, Sanshou, and wrestling.
Away from the ring, Thach Minh is a doctor.
Thach Minh's introduction to martial arts was by chance. During a college camp, an MMA coach noticed Thach Minh. After a few contacts, he convinced Thach Minh to try this sport. So over the years, Thach Minh practiced at the hospital during the day and went to the gym to practice martial arts at night.
In 2018, she was still a university student when she started to train intensively in wrestling in Kunming. By 2020, she had won 12 major and minor MMA tournaments in China, Korea and Myanmar in the 54 kg weight class.
"After three fierce rounds, she stepped out of the octagon and instantly transformed into a cute young woman with her opponent's blood on her face and a beautiful blue headband on her forehead, smiling innocently," China.com described Shi Ming when she won the biggest MMA tournament exclusively for women in China, called Mulan War.
With a thorough training in traditional medicine, understanding the body structure and acupuncture points, Thach Minh knows exactly where to hit for the best results. In addition, traditional medicine treatments are also very helpful in the recovery process.
"For me, martial arts and medicine are not only not opposed but also complement each other," Sina quoted Shi Ming as saying in an interview a few years ago, with the comment: " Shi Ming's success not only reflects her superb fighting techniques, but also shows the perfect combination of traditional Chinese medicine and martial arts. She has brought elements of traditional Chinese medicine into combat, turning it into a way to train the body and mind."
China's number 1 expert was shocked
Thach Minh's talent was noticed more after a match with Zhang Weili, the number 1 female MMA expert in China.
"Truong Vi Le is famous for her terrible strength and fierce fighting style. In the match with Thach Minh, she was shocked by the sweeping kicks. These kicks are not only strong but also highly accurate. Thach Minh once knocked Truong Vi Le down with this move," Sohu page described.

Footwork is a signature technique of Thach Minh. She also often instructs her patients to do the same movement to stretch their tendons.
"Thach Minh's kick made me realize the true art of martial arts," Truong Vi Le commented on his opponent after the match.
On the night of November 23, Zhang Wei Li was also present in the stands to witness Shi Ming's fight with Feng Xiaocan. As soon as the female doctor launched her familiar kick that sent her opponent to the hospital, the famous senior immediately jumped out of her seat and shouted with excitement. Zhang Wei Li clapped her hands continuously, then opened her mouth wide, shook her head, and covered her face with her hands, clearly showing her shock.
Chinese social networks were also stirred up by this moment with comments like: "The scary thing is that she is a doctor and only practices MMA part-time", "When doctors lack patients, she creates patients herself", "Imagine being knocked out by someone and when you wake up, she is still treating you", "After being overwhelmed for 2 rounds, she turned the tables with a high kick that knocked out her opponent. That is the beauty of martial arts" ...
The victory that went viral on social media last weekend earned Thach Minh a $50,000 bonus. Not only that, she was signed to a contract with UFC, the company that organizes the world's largest MMA tournament system.
"I will return and focus on studying, then become a professional boxer after graduation," Thach Minh shared.
