Meritorious Artist Thanh Loc once said that he dreamed of a purely Vietnamese musical theater, and now his wish has come true. And he also said during the premiere of Giang Huong that the motto of him and his group of artist friends is "it's okay to die, as long as it satisfies the desire to build a decent theater for the next generation".
Actress Giang Huong (played by Le Khanh) and author, actor, director, and producer Linh Nam (Meritorious Artist Thanh Loc) were once a famous artist couple admired by the audience. They were both husband and wife and colleagues, inseparable.
Giang Huong is the first play in a series of 3 musicals that Thanh Loc and his group of artist friends are rehearsing for this release.
Giang Huong is originally a famous Cai Luong play called San Kha Ve Khon by the late composer - People's Artist Nguyen Thanh Chau, now adapted by Meritorious Artist Thanh Loc into a drama version with very youthful and modern changes but still not losing its traditional features. In particular, the music was "designed" and arranged very well by musician Huu Thu, the music is easy to listen to, easy to feel, in harmony with the ancient Cai Luong songs interspersed, not "offensive". The audience is truly captivated and moved by the beauty of this music. The ancient pentatonic scale seems to be also lingering in every melody and lyric of today's new music, and overall it is very luxurious.
But Giang Huong and Linh Nam's relationship broke down because they started arguing about artistic trends, and Linh Nam had another woman, My Tien (Van Trang), a wealthy merchant.
The performances of veteran artists such as Thanh Loc, Le Khanh, Tuan Khai, Huu Chau, Van Trang, Hoang Trinh, Huong Giang... all conquered the audience. These are artists who are familiar with performing musicals from the IDECAF stage, so when they moved to Thien Dang, they were not surprised at all. Thanh Loc's directing hand led everyone through a beautiful cathedral, closely following each line, each action, meticulously following each detail, delicate in psychology...
Linh Nam left the troupe, leaving Giang Huong to struggle alone. She almost collapsed without Linh Nam's help. Her friend Quoc Son (Tuan Khai) was always by her side to encourage and comfort her.
Giang Huong is also cared for by her daughter Giang Kieu (Trang Tuyen) and the maid Sau (Meritorious Artist Hoang Trinh).
Many viewers sat there and cried, not only because of the good script and touching story, but also because they admired the artists' dedication and sweat that they poured into a true "sanctuary".
Especially the great encouragement of the senior actor Manh Hoai (Meritorious Artist Huu Chau)
Amidst the market flow, Giáng Hương suddenly appears bright, noble, respectable, trustworthy. Yes, people believe that the HCM City stage must be like that, deserves to be like that.
Finally, Linh Nam returns to the "sanctuary" of art with Giang Huong
Countless rounds of applause. Countless tears. And finally, a bright smile when the curtain closed. The lingering echoes of Giáng Hương still linger for a long time…
