On April 8, the Hanoi Department of Culture and Sports coordinated with the Hanoi Drama Theater to organize a conference to summarize the Project on Introducing and Performing Plays adapted from famous Vietnamese and international literary works included in the general education program at schools in Hanoi for the period 2022-2030 (in the pilot phase 2022-2024, referred to as the School Theater Project).

This is a practical experience activity that helps students understand more deeply the literary works in textbooks and love the performing arts more.

According to People's Artist Trung Hieu - Director of Hanoi Drama Theater, in the pilot phase, the unit successfully staged new works such as: The Story of a Nam Xuong Girl based on the Legend of Man Luc by Nguyen Du, Thuy Kieu - A Broken Life based on the Tale of Kieu by the great poet Nguyen Du , The Spirit of Exercise based on the work of the same name by writer Nguyen Cong Hoan...

People's Artist Trung Hieu affirmed that right from the script stage, Hanoi Drama Theater has chosen works with traditional Vietnamese cultural content combined with many rich forms of expression so that students can easily receive and love them. From there, it makes them more excited to enjoy the art of theater.

From December 2022 to the end of 2024, Hanoi Drama Theater has successfully organized 172 performances (both in theaters and at high schools) for about 80,000 students from schools in 14 districts in Hanoi.

"The project creates an open and attractive learning format for students, through the use of artistic language, contributing to conveying famous literary works of Vietnam and the world. Through performances, the theater also builds potential audiences and searches for performing arts talents," People's Artist Trung Hieu affirmed.

However, People's Artist Trung Hieu said that during the implementation phase, it is necessary to increase the number of performances for high schools to ensure that all students have access to the School Theater Project.

Agreeing with the opinion of People's Artist Trung Hieu, Deputy Director of Hanoi Department of Culture and Sports Le Thi Anh Mai said that in the period of 2025-2030, it is expected to increase the number of performances for schools, theaters under the Hanoi Department of Culture and Sports will participate with abundant human resources, well-trained actors and a rich source of plays.

The Deputy Director of the Hanoi Department of Culture and Sports also emphasized that the next phase, when expanding to 1,400 - 1,600 schools, will encourage art units to try to exploit folk materials, combining contemporary elements so that students can more easily absorb the plays.

Appreciating the determination of the units participating in the project, Director of the Hanoi Department of Culture and Sports Bach Lien Huong affirmed that students are not only potential audiences but also human resources to preserve, maintain and promote traditional artistic values. Therefore, the requirement is to consider this an important task and must be carried out methodically.

"Students need to know about Vietnamese history and culture. If students can transform into the characters of the play, their understanding of the work will be much deeper," affirmed the Director of the Hanoi Department of Culture and Sports.

Therefore, Ms. Huong emphasized that the School Theater Project needs to be implemented strongly, systematically, simultaneously and comprehensively not only in public primary and secondary schools but also in private schools. Not only drama but also reformed opera, cheo, puppetry... also need to be brought into schools for students to access.
