People's Artist Hong Van and Kieu Minh Tuan cannot save the mixed film 'The Bride of a Rich Family'

Although the cast tried their best to act, they still couldn't make the movie "The Rich Bride" more special because the script was illogical, the content and message lacked depth, leaving viewers disappointed.

The Bride of a Noble Family Officially premiered on October 18, directed by Vu Ngoc Dang, featuring actors Huynh Uyen An, Kieu Minh Tuan, Le Giang, Thu Trang, People's Artist Hong Van... As a long-time lover of Vietnamese cinema, I booked tickets to see it on the first day the film was released.

I had expected this to be a decent work, at least okay among the fluctuating quality of the current Vietnamese film market. But unfortunately, what I got was a “mixed” film. After nearly 2 hours in the theater, I felt like I was watching a work that was “all in the head and all in the tail”, without leaving a good enough message - even on the surface.

With a flawed script and weak content, the acting is the redeeming factor for the film. However, unfortunately, the cast cannot save an unstable work.

Grace With the main role, Tu Lac showed more effort and progress in dialogue and on-screen expressions compared to previous projects, but it was not enough for her to stand out.

Uyen An tried hard but it was still not enough to win over the audience.

From the second half of the film, the character Tu Lac, Tran Thanh's younger sister, was completely obscured. At the explosive climax, when she was stuck between her family and her boyfriend's feelings, the actress was not able to push her emotions to convince the audience.

Samuel An, who plays the role of young master Bao Hoang, disappointed with his stiff acting. His performance in many scenes made the audience laugh because of his broken words and awkward expressions. A friend of mine joked that at the end of the film, the only thing that remained of the character Bao Hoang was "a mobile vase", nothing but handsomeness.

Meanwhile, Quynh Luong caused discomfort with her loud, booming dialogue in most of the scenes where her character appeared. The director's overuse of verbal arguments and swearing, from the upper class to the residents of the apartment building, made viewers feel suffocated and counterproductive because there was not much empathy.

The characters in the movie have conflicting personalities and lack depth.

People's Artist Hong Van and Le Giang still maintain their acting style. However, they do not have any breakthrough, still only stick to the role of making people laugh, being framed with the image of a talkative, scolding mother.

The role of Mrs. Phuong is probably a shirt that does not fit Thu Trang. Despite her efforts, her appearance, acting and "forced" dialogue made her completely out of tune in portraying a rich, powerful and profound lady character as described by the director.

Kieu Minh Tuan is the highlight of the film.

The rare bright spot of the film probably belongs to Kieu Minh Tuan, when he created sympathy thanks to the character of a middle-aged man with a criminal past, many ups and downs. Besides the humorous scenes, the actor conveyed well the deep scenes, especially the part where the father confided in his son about his past mistakes, which caused the family to break up.

Most actors put effort into their acting, trying to renew themselves. However, perhaps with an illogical script and thin character psychology, they unintentionally cannot stand out as expected.

During the premiere, Vu Ngoc Dang shared with the media that this was the best work in his filmmaking career so far, and would even open up a new direction in his career. It seems that he was too confident with this "child" or ignored the sincere and straightforward comments that experts and colleagues gave him after the film was released.

Remember the 2023 Tet movie season - movies Sister sister 2 Vu Ngoc Dang's film was released in theaters. After watching it, a film critic wrote on Facebook, roughly: I didn't think a long-standing name like Vu Ngoc Dang would create such a naive and clumsy work .

Vu Ngoc Dang should be sober before compliments and reduce extremism.

To the work The rich bride , that comment is true once again because the work is built quite superficially, difficult to create sympathy for the audience. It feels like the director is struggling with himself, with the rich-poor conflict story that he tried to mold and nurture but the result was not there, so it created a forced feeling.

That does not mean Vu Ngoc Dang is a bad director. He has impressive works, good enough to be recognized by professionals, from the early days like Hot boy rebel or The Godfather, The Little Girl Looking for a Husband … The problem with him is probably his style and confidence, sometimes to the point of being subjective and extreme. I believe that if he could control this, he would have good enough works like before.

After 1 week of release, the film earned 47 billion VND, topping the box office (as of the evening of October 23), according to Box Office Vietnam . That shows that the work is still well received by a segment of easy-going audiences who overlook flaws in the script and watch it for entertainment purposes. As for viewers with higher quality requirements like me, the film will certainly cause great disappointment.
