NSMO: Determined not to let power shortages occur during peak hot weather

(Chinhphu.vn) - Before the peak of the dry season and the April 30 - May 1 holiday, the National Electricity System and Market Operation Company Limited (NSMO) is urgently implementing solutions with the spirit of "not letting any incidents happen, not letting any locality lack electricity".

At a recent meeting of the NSMO Power Supply Steering Committee, NSMO General Director Nguyen Duc Ninh requested that the entire system be ready with safe and stable operation plans, especially in the current extreme weather conditions.

Temperatures rise, absolutely do not let power shortages happen

According to the report at the meeting, by mid-April, the key tasks in the first quarter of 2025 had been basically completed. Notably, the development of a plan for peak dry season operations, updating the construction progress of the Hoa Binh Hydropower Plant Expansion Project and impacts on available capacity, along with solutions to coordinate the operation of important transmission grids serving the construction of major traffic routes such as Hanoi Ring Road 4.

In addition, NSMO has also issued the Operation Procedures for Special Discharge Circuits and chaired meetings with EVN, PV GAS, and power generation corporations to discuss mobilizing LNG sources. The spirit of initiative, coordination, and efficiency is consistent throughout each implementation task.

Meteorological data from the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting shows that from April to June 2025, temperatures across the country will continue to rise, with many severe heat waves.

The North and North Central regions may record temperatures above 38°C during the first heat wave from April 19-24 and last until the end of June, even reaching 40°C on some days.

With the increasing load, especially during the April 30 - May 1 holidays and the peak heat from May to July, NSMO requires units to closely monitor hydrological and meteorological conditions to adjust appropriate operating methods. "Absolutely do not let there be a power shortage, but also ensure system safety and optimize economic efficiency," Mr. Nguyen Duc Ninh emphasized.

Comprehensive preparation to ensure power supply for holidays and peak dry season

As of April 2025, the total electricity production and import output nationwide reached about 98.7 billion kWh, up 2.6% over the same period but still 8.4 billion kWh lower than the plan. Therefore, it is urgent to develop a reasonable operation plan and optimally mobilize coal, LNG, hydropower and renewable energy sources.

NSMO has directed to increase on-duty at the Northern, Central and Southern Control Centers during the holiday. Deputy General Directors directly inspect operations and direct the handling of arising situations.

At the same time, plans for incident handling drills, control room conversion, ensuring grid safety and fire prevention and fighting were also urgently implemented.

Mr. Nguyen Duc Ninh also requested that functional departments and regional control centers coordinate closely to develop a method of operating power supply during the April 30 holiday and May 2025, focusing on scenarios of heat waves lasting 5-7 consecutive days.

Notably, NSMO is also urgently implementing Document 2542/BCT-DL dated April 11, 2025 of the Ministry of Industry and Trade. Accordingly, functional departments need to complete a series of processes such as: equipment testing, generator monitoring, SCADA, data measurement, electricity market operation, etc.

In particular, regional power system dispatch centers need to review regulations on energizing and testing new projects according to Circular No. 05/2025/TT-BCT, ensuring consistent implementation throughout the system.

In addition, NSMO also coordinates with relevant units to promote propaganda on the situation of electricity supply, electricity saving and safety conditions, fire prevention, especially during the peak of the hot season in 2025.
