Applying digital transformation helps agricultural products meet market demands for transparency in the production process and traceability of products. At the same time, digital transformation also helps farmers increase the value and efficiency of their products...

Sustainable rice farming direction

In fact, agricultural production in Vietnam in general and Binh Thuan in particular is facing the direct impacts of extreme climate. Therefore, we must take action to reduce greenhouse gas emissions according to the Vietnam Netzero policy. Agricultural production in Binh Thuan, including rice production, also needs to contribute to reducing carbon emissions through sustainable rice cultivation.

In order to effectively implement the plan of the People's Committee of Binh Thuan province on developing high-quality commercial rice production areas, in recent times, the Provincial Agricultural Extension Center has focused on training, disseminating and building agricultural extension models to transfer the application of scientific and technical advances in rice production. Typically, the SRP sustainable rice cultivation model (a new production model based on rice production in the direction of "3 reductions, 3 increases", "1 must, 5 reductions") integrates many new advances. At the same time, applying digital transformation to record electronic diaries for rice growers, helping farmers to make the production process transparent, through the labeling system, building green brands and creating product competitiveness. For example, in 2024, the Agricultural Extension Center organized training on rice production techniques according to SRP sustainable standards and training on the application of electronic production diaries, traceability with 95 classes, each class of 30 people in 5 key rice-growing districts in the province.

Along with that, building demonstration models of rice production according to VietGAP standards or equivalent - "footprint-free" fields with a scale of 160 hectares; building demonstration models applying some new high-quality rice varieties such as Dai Thom 8, ST25, Bac Thinh... with a scale of more than 50 hectares. Notably, all more than 200 hectares of rice production are deployed synchronously in districts with key rice growing areas of the province such as Duc Linh, Tanh Linh, Ham Thuan Bac and Bac Binh. Accordingly, rice is produced according to the given technical process, applying the measures of "1 must, 5 reductions". Specifically, farmers need to use certified or original rice varieties that the local agricultural sector recommends for production; reduce the amount of seeds planted and sown by 80 - 120 kg/ha; reduce fertilizer; reduce irrigation water; reduce post-harvest losses...

Digital transformation is an important method in agricultural production

One of the current highlights in the digital transformation of the province's agricultural sector is that the BINH THUAN DIGITAL AGRICULTURE APP has become an important method to help farmers and businesses produce quality agriculture at the lowest cost but with the highest profits. Accordingly, all rice models deployed in 2024 have been applied with electronic diary recording, thereby making the production process transparent, and tracing the origin of rice produced in association with building a green brand. Therefore, digital transformation associated with green transformation is inevitable.

According to Mr. Ngo Thai Son - Deputy Director in charge of Binh Thuan Agricultural Extension Center, the current requirements require people and businesses to improve their capacity and apply technology. Thereby, meeting high technical requirements not only for product quality, but also for design and environmental standards. In order to produce rice to meet the needs of integration and export, we aim to apply science and technology to build ecological agriculture, modern countryside, and civilized farmers. Specifically, the rice production is being implemented as "1 must, 6 reductions" linking digital transformation with green transformation, integrating multi-value for Binh Thuan rice products. According to Mr. Son, in addition to "5 reductions" to increase product quality and economic efficiency, the 6th reduction is "reducing emissions". Thereby, aiming at the project that the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development is implementing in the Mekong Delta (Project 1 million hectares of rice to reduce emissions). Although Binh Thuan province is not included in the project, it is always a pioneer in applying and adopting new things to keep up with the general development trend.

In addition to applying digital transformation and green transformation on rice, Binh Thuan's agricultural sector has recently applied a carbon footprint traceability system to a number of cooperatives, farms and dragon fruit production areas. From there, domestic and international consumers can scan QR codes transparently to trace the origin of the product and the level of green or environmentally friendly practices applied in the dragon fruit production process. Green labeling makes Binh Thuan dragon fruit stand out in terms of environment and competitive advantage. Green labeling is a certification representing compliance with international quality standards on environment, nature, ecosystem protection and food safety. To achieve that green label, agricultural extension activities have applied digital transformation to develop strongly and synchronously.

Although the digital transformation process in agricultural production in Binh Thuan still faces difficulties and challenges. However, with the efforts, attempts and support of the entire political system, localities... Binh Thuan farmers have been changing their thinking, changing their working methods towards creating products that are suitable for different market segments. Not only the issue of rice or dragon fruit cultivation, but all activities to create agricultural products need to apply processes and use reasonable input factors such as fertilizers, pesticides... so as not to destroy the ecosystem and biological layers. Thereby, aiming for digital transformation and green transformation in the province's agriculture.

According to Plan No. 4517/KH-UBND dated November 20, 2023 of the People's Committee of Binh Thuan province on developing high-quality commercial rice production areas in the province by 2025: The goal is to strive by 2025 for the province to stabilize the area of high-quality commercial rice production at 17,745 hectares, with a yield of over 6 tons/ha, of which about 50% of the area is linked and contracted with enterprises in production and product consumption. Profits increase by about 10 - 15% compared to normal production.
