These days, people in Hong Linh village, Vuong Loc commune (Can Loc - Ha Tinh) are busy harvesting and selling vegetable seedlings to meet market demand.
For the past few weeks, every day, Mrs. Phan Thi Hong Loc - Hong Linh village wakes up at 3 am to work hard on the vegetable beds of various types such as: mustard greens, lettuce, cabbage, cauliflower, eggplant, tomatoes... To meet market demand, she is always busy in her family's garden of more than 3,500 m2 until 11 pm.
Every day, Mrs. Loc's work starts at 3 am.
Ms. Loc shared: “On this occasion, the demand for seedlings from farmers is quite high, so sometimes I have to hire more workers to keep up with orders. It is hard work, but in return, each day we have a significant additional source of income for our family, so we are very excited.”
As a large vegetable seed granary in Can Loc district, the number of customers from all over the province coming to Hong Linh village has been increasing recently. This is also the motivation for villagers to maintain the vegetable area in their home gardens and expand the area in the fields, converting some ineffective rice growing areas to vegetable seed growing. From small-scale production, vegetable seeds have now become a commodity product, bringing a significant source of income to villagers.
People in Hong Linh village have a significant income from vegetable seeds.
Ms. Luong Thi Huong - Hong Linh village said: "Growing vegetable seedlings is quite busy because of the elaborate care, but in return, the income is quite good. My family grows 2 sao of fertile land with all kinds of seedlings. This time, on average, we sell more than a few thousand seedlings per day, earning from 800 to 1 million VND."
This year, there are two leap months in February, so the production of winter vegetable seedlings by farmers in Hong Linh village is slower than every year. On the other hand, entering the first sowing period (early October 2023), the weather was unfavorable, with prolonged heavy rains causing many areas to be damaged and plants to grow slowly. However, thanks to the investment and care of the people, the quality of the seedlings is always guaranteed. Farmers and traders from all regions of the province come to the gardens to buy plants according to their needs.
Ms. Le Thi Ty - a farmer from Cam Xuyen district shared: "Having produced vegetables for sale for many years, I really like the source of seeds from Hong Linh village. Although it is a bit far, but after many seasons of getting seeds here, we really trust this place to order."
For many years, Mrs. Ty has become a regular customer of the people of Hong Linh village.
Up to now, Hong Linh village has 25 hectares of vegetable seeds, each crop supplying the market with millions of seedlings such as: kohlrabi, cauliflower, cabbage, squash, pumpkin, various vegetables... In addition to favorable natural factors, in recent years, the people of Hong Linh village have focused on investing in vegetable seed gardens with new farming methods, care processes, irrigation systems, garden planning, greenhouses...
“Since 2014, when the village started building new rural areas, model new rural residential areas, and model gardens, production planning has been put into order and professionalism. Therefore, in addition to increasing output, the quality of vegetable seedlings has also been improved,” said Mr. Nguyen Xuan Thao - Head of the Hong Linh Village Farmers’ Association.
Vegetable seeds are canned by people to supply markets in and outside the province.
Along with harvesting vegetable seeds, farmers in Hong Linh village are currently continuing to expand the area of growing cold-loving vegetables, tubers and fruits according to the right seasonal schedule, proactively sourcing goods to supply the Tet market.
From the effectiveness of winter vegetable production in Hong Linh village, recently, Vuong Loc commune has developed a plan and solutions to encourage people to develop winter vegetable production, especially in the Hong Linh mountainside and household gardens. With the attention and support of local authorities and the dynamism and creativity of the people, vegetable seeds have become a commodity that increases income, improves people's lives and creates a unique feature for the new rural area.
