Adapt to nature
At this time, the South Central provinces are in the dry season, with intense heat and temperatures above and below 40 degrees Celsius. In many places, some crops have reduced productivity, but cassava farmers in Son Giang commune, Song Hinh district are still confident about cassava, one of the crops suitable for local soil and climate conditions. More importantly, cassava in Song Hinh has been applied CNC with the form of planting covered with tarpaulin for the past few crops.
Currently, the commune government focuses on encouraging farmers to grow cassava using tarpaulins combined with drip irrigation. This is a direction that is suitable for local conditions, as well as the needs and aspirations of cassava growers. Therefore, the locality will promote and guide farmers to replicate the model, thereby helping farmers to eliminate hunger and reduce poverty from cassava.
Mr. Nay Y Set, Chairman of People's Committee of Song Hinh Commune, Song Hinh District
For example, Mr. Nguyen Phu's family in Ha Giang village, Son Giang commune - one of the households that boldly converted 5 sao of traditional cassava to growing cassava covered with tarpaulin combined with drip irrigation.
According to Mr. Phu, in the beginning, he did not have to spend much time taking care of the plant, saving irrigation water, and when harvesting, the cassava yield doubled. These are the advantages of the cassava planting model covered with tarpaulin that the people of Ha Giang village are applying.
In the same village of Ha Giang, with an area of 5 hectares, previously, Mr. Phung Xuan Thoi's family mainly grew cassava in the traditional way, so cassava yield was low due to leaf diseases.
“With the guidance of local agricultural officials, I have improved the soil and switched to growing cassava using a model of covering the cuttings with tarpaulins and using nylon tarpaulins to cover the beds to prevent weeds. This has limited fertilizer runoff, kept the soil moist, and when it rains, the cuttings do not rot and drain easily. Thanks to this, the cassava plants grow and develop well. When harvested, the cassava yield doubled, and the starch content of the cassava tubers is much higher than the traditional cassava growing method that my family has long used,” Thoi shared.
According to some local people, the cassava planting model covered with tarpaulin has many advantages. Because of the use of tarpaulin holes and drainage ditches between the rows, when it rains, the cassava plants are not flooded. Therefore, the plants grow well, are easy to care for, save water, reduce weeding, reduce fertilizer... Currently, the yield of cassava planted with tarpaulin in Song Hinh district reaches 45 - 55 tons/ha, while cassava grown in the traditional way only reaches 20 - 25 tons/ha. After deducting costs, farmers earn a profit of more than 50 million VND/ha.
Propaganda and guidance to replicate the CNC cassava growing model
Mr. Nay Y Set - Chairman of the People's Committee of Song Hinh Commune, Song Hinh District said: Currently, the commune government focuses on encouraging farmers to grow cassava with tarpaulins combined with drip irrigation. This is a direction suitable for local conditions, as well as the needs and aspirations of cassava growers. Therefore, the locality will promote and guide farmers to replicate the model, thereby helping farmers to eliminate hunger and reduce poverty from cassava.
It can be seen that in Song Hinh district, cassava has helped many households escape poverty, and is the main source of income for households. Cassava has the advantage of being suitable for the soil and easy to consume, so farmers choose to grow it, gradually forming concentrated production areas, creating a large volume of products, contributing to improving people's lives. Therefore, the model of growing cassava covered with tarpaulin is a positive solution that localities in Song Hinh district are particularly interested in to increase people's income.
As shared by Mr. Dinh Ngoc Dan - Chairman of Song Hinh District People's Committee: The District People's Committee has worked with Phu Yen Cassava Starch Joint Stock Company to continue investing in the model of growing cassava covered with tarpaulin in the next crop. Specifically, in Hai Rieng town, Song Hinh commune, people will learn from the experience, on that basis, they will calculate to replicate. With high productivity and stable purchase price, cassava is expected to open up great prospects for people to increase their income and sustainably reduce poverty. Along with expanding the area of cassava covered with tarpaulin, local authorities will also calculate the solution to handle plastic waste (tarps) to ensure the environment.
In the whole Song Hinh district, there are currently more than 100 households applying cassava planting under tarpaulin with about 50 hectares. In the 2023-2024 winter-spring crop, the district will coordinate with Phu Yen Cassava Starch Joint Stock Company to deploy a model and provide technical guidance on cassava planting using agricultural tarpaulin combined with drip irrigation with an area of 5 hectares, with 7 households in Song Hinh, Son Giang communes and Hai Rieng town participating (support of 20 million VND/ha).
