The spring rice crop in Ha Tinh is entering its peak harvesting season. Across the fields, the atmosphere of the harvest season is becoming increasingly bustling and hectic…

Farmers in Ha Tinh are rushing to harvest the spring rice crop.

Combine harvesters speed across the vast fields following land consolidation and conversion.

In the Can Loc rice granary, these days the fields resemble construction sites. Hundreds of combine harvesters are working continuously to meet harvesting deadlines. Taking advantage of favorable weather, farmers are busy in the fields day and night, following the machines to bring the rice home or to collection points to sell to traders.

Ms. Tran Thi Tam (Doan Ket village, Thien Loc commune, Can Loc district) happily shared: “This year, my family planted nearly 2 acres of rice, mainly high-quality varieties, so the yield was high, 4 quintals per sao (1 sao = 360 square meters). We followed the village's plan to harvest the entire area early. This season, Thien Loc commune has developed a large-scale rice field, so the harvesting time is much shorter than before. The hot weather is ideal for the rice to ripen evenly and beautifully, making it easier for farmers to harvest and dry the rice.”

The joy of a bountiful harvest is evident on the faces of the farmers in Thien Loc commune, Can Loc district.

When farmers are busy with the harvest season, it's also the busiest time for combine harvester owners and workers. Mr. Tran Van Huan, a combine harvester owner in Khanh Vinh Yen commune (Can Loc district), said: “The hot weather makes things even harder for us, so we have to work overtime harvesting at night to avoid the heat and speed up the process.”

Reportedly, Can Loc district is leading the entire province in terms of harvest progress. The district has deployed more than 150 combine harvesters to each village unit; organizing simultaneous harvesting in a staggered manner, ensuring that each field and each village is neatly harvested.

Mr. Phan Cao Ky, Head of the Agriculture and Rural Development Department of Can Loc district, said: "The yield of the spring rice crop this year in the district is expected to reach nearly 62 quintals/hectare, about 1 quintal/hectare higher than the spring crop of 2022. We strive to complete the harvest of the 2023 spring rice crop in the next 3-5 days and finish planting the summer-autumn crop before June 10th."

According to assessments by specialized agencies, the yield of spring rice in Ha Tinh this year is estimated at 58.96 quintals/hectare (the highest ever in Ha Tinh), with an estimated production of 350,117 tons.

On the large-scale model farm of over 70 hectares in Dong Doai village (Nam Phuc Thang commune, Cam Xuyen district), the joy of a successful harvest in terms of yield is evident on the faces of every farmer.

Ms. Pham Thi Doan (Dong Doai village, Nam Phuc Thang commune) shared: “This is the first time I've harvested on a large, concentrated model field without small embankments. Nearly 7 sao (approximately 0.7 hectares) of rice paddies were moved to one place, saving a lot of harvesting time; the harvesting machine finished in almost half a day. Because of the tight schedule, after harvesting the spring rice crop, we had to clean up the fields, prepare seeds and supplies, and rent machinery for the summer-autumn crop.”

The joy of farmers in the fields undergoing land conversion during the spring planting season of 2023.

Mr. Hoang Kim Tuy, Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Nam Phuc Thang commune, said: "This year's spring crop is considered the most bountiful ever, with an average yield of over 62 quintals/hectare across the commune. The rice is beautiful and uniform throughout the concentrated production areas. More than 50% of the area has been harvested, and the season is expected to be completed before May 23rd. Fields that have undergone land consolidation and conversion are yielding high productivity, producing a single variety, and increasing the rate of mechanization in all stages, so the people are very happy."

The harvest season is becoming increasingly urgent throughout the province. From Ky Anh, Thach Ha, Can Loc, and Duc Tho districts up to Huong Son, Vu Quang, and Huong Khe, progress is being accelerated thanks to the focus on mechanization. Local authorities are also strengthening propaganda, inspection, and strictly handling cases of protection rackets, territorial disputes, and unauthorized price increases, ensuring that farmers can harvest quickly and conveniently.

To date, the entire province has harvested nearly 7,000 hectares of spring rice, reaching almost 11% of the total area. Districts with large harvested areas include: Can Loc (3,200 ha), Duc Tho (1,000 ha), Cam Xuyen (900 ha), Nghi Xuan (650 ha)... The remaining localities are also starting to "accelerate," striving to concentrate their efforts from May 20th to 27th. According to assessments by specialized agencies, the yield of this year's spring rice crop is estimated at 58.96 quintals/hectare (the highest ever), with an estimated production of 350,117 tons.

During a recent agricultural production inspection in Can Loc district, the Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee, Vo Trong Hai, directed the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development to monitor and mobilize maximum manpower and machinery to accelerate the rice harvest. He instructed them to implement measures to ensure rational rice harvesting, prevent unhealthy competition for harvesting machines, and take advantage of favorable weather conditions to focus on drying and processing rice to prevent post-harvest losses and ensure rice quality. He also emphasized the need to regulate and retain water in the fields; prepare machinery, agricultural supplies, seeds, and fertilizers for the summer-autumn crop production according to schedule; and continue to expand the model of breaking down small field boundaries to create larger, more concentrated plots of land.
