Hyundai will begin rolling out its next-generation cabin design for models launched in 2026. In the future, physical buttons inside Hyundai cars will remain in place to improve safety and reduce driver distraction, Autocar reported.
The move by the Korean manufacturer comes after Volkswagen also announced a return to physical controls, due to complaints from users that the design relies heavily on touch screens, making it easy for drivers to get distracted.

Hyundai's 2026 car interiors will have more physical buttons. |
The new design direction could also use smaller infotainment screens and easier-to-use touchscreen software to improve safety, said Simon Loasby, Hyundai's vice president of design.
“Our vision for the interior of our next-generation Hyundai vehicles is to keep the driver’s eyes on the road as much as possible. With this in mind, we quickly realized that the central display was a distraction… Therefore, frequently used functions such as climate control, volume, etc. should be kept as physical buttons so that they can be operated easily without looking,” said Mr. Loasby.

Finding the right screen size to display information while still allowing the driver to focus on driving will be a key part of next-generation cabin design, says Hyundai design chief Luc Donckerwolke.
“We had to make sure that the driver didn’t have to go into submenus to do simple things that were once just a button press,” says Donckerwolke. “If you rely on the screen, you take your hands off the wheel, your eyes off the road – that’s a safety design no-no.”

More generally, Donckerwolke sees the auto industry seeing a return to mechanical details and a reduction in screens in the next generation or two. Hyundai is also working on the interior layout of upcoming high-performance models under the N brand, Loasby said.
“When it comes to N models, we put more things on the steering wheel, because if I wear gloves, I can't use the touchscreen,” Loasby said.
