Not academic

Following the books Vietnamese is also tough (Le Minh Quoc) and The art of speaking in reverse through the Southern folk language (Nam Chi Bui Thanh Kien), Ho Chi Minh City General Publishing House has just introduced the publication Vietnamese words and meanings, the soul of the folk by Associate Professor, Dr. Pham Van Tinh. The book collects the author's new articles in the past 5 years, divided into 2 main topics: Idioms, proverbs and Words in the Tale of Kieu. The articles are usually not long, delving into the semantics of idioms and proverbs in an easy-to-understand way.

According to Mr. Tran Dinh Ba, Deputy Director - Deputy Editor-in-Chief of Ho Chi Minh City General Publishing House, in addition to the cultural and historical section, the Publishing House has also paid attention to research books, especially on language, but they have not been systematically organized. The Vietnamese Language Bookshelf was built to help readers have a systematic approach to learning Vietnamese in a way that does not focus on academic issues but is simple and easy to understand to reach general readers.

“Authors often study Vietnamese through aspects such as semantics, folk songs, proverbs, idioms, or the comparison of ancient and modern languages. The writing style when approaching tries to be as gentle as possible, reducing academic language so that readers can feel the work in a gentle way when reading. Because the field of linguistics requires expertise to delve into and is also somewhat dry,” said Mr. Tran Dinh Ba.

Before Ho Chi Minh City General Publishing House, Tre Publishing House also had a Rich and Beautiful Vietnamese book series that was established more than 20 years ago, gathering many leading experts and prestigious authors on the language. As a participant in both book series, poet Le Minh Quoc said that there are issues and specialized fields that when participating in research, at some point we will stop because we feel it is complete, but with Vietnamese it is different.

“From the moment we are born, we learn Vietnamese, and like all global languages, our vocabulary grows and grows over the years. Therefore, to understand it, even Vietnamese people need to continue learning. Therefore, having more specialized books on Vietnamese is a good and precious thing,” poet Le Minh Quoc shared.

Aimed at young readers

In addition to the two bookcases Vietnamese Language and Rich and Beautiful Vietnamese Language, recently some young authors born in the 80s and 90s such as Le Trong Nghia, Nguyen Thuy Dung, etc. have also participated in writing books about Vietnamese, thereby transmitting the love of Vietnamese to readers, especially the young. According to poet Le Minh Quoc, this is very meaningful when we have proven that Vietnamese is pure, rich and beautiful and has enough vocabulary to express all fields, all issues, all emotions.

“What I always hope for is that more and more people will be interested in the Vietnamese language. That interest is expressed from any angle, equally respectful and valuable. In terms of the nature of the Vietnamese language, we see that in addition to the common language, there are also regional dialects. Therefore, this is an “equal” field for everyone, not just one person,” said poet Le Minh Quoc.

After 3 publications, the Vietnamese Language bookshelf will soon have more works by Associate Professor, Dr. Pham Van Tinh and researcher Huynh Cong Tin. In addition, according to Mr. Tran Dinh Ba, Ho Chi Minh City General Publishing House will expand to include other authors who are more or less interested in, studying and researching Vietnamese.

Mr. Tran Dinh Ba said: “The Vietnamese Language Bookshelf not only studies language but also pays attention to the issue of dialect. Dialect is a very unique type of each locality and region, creating diversity in the Vietnamese language. We also hope that the bookshelf will reach young readers, so the writing style, images and writing team must also be more open than the familiar authors that have been established. Because no one understands young people better than their peers.”

“Personally, I always aim for awareness, once Vietnamese has the vocabulary to express a certain issue, we should use it in Vietnamese, and not necessarily follow the trend of inserting foreign languages as a way to “pretend”. The current Vietnamese language library is doing a very good job of this by showing readers the rich and diverse vocabulary of the Vietnamese people, past and present,” poet Le Minh Quoc expressed.
