Today, August 22, in Hanoi, the Hanoi National University Examination Center held a conference to summarize the 2024 HSA competency assessment exam and deploy the 2025 plan.
At the conference, Professor Nguyen Tien Thao, Director of the Testing Center of Hanoi National University, shared about the plan to organize the HSA 2025 competency assessment exam, including quite detailed information about the content of the HSA competency assessment exam.
The first time the exam has cluster questions
According to Professor Nguyen Tien Thao, the HSA high school student assessment test of Hanoi National University is designed to assess the core competencies required of high school students to achieve according to the general education program and in accordance with standards and trends in capacity assessment in the world.
Through the knowledge content of the general education program, the test assesses 3 main groups of competencies that students achieve after graduating from high school.
The difficulty of the questions in the HSA assessment test increases from level 1 to level 3 and is divided according to the following ratio: level 1 is 20%, level 2 is 60%, level 3 is 20%.
The questions in the HSA assessment test are more than 75% objective multiple choice questions with 4 options, the rest are fill-in-the-blank questions. From 2025, the assessment test will add cluster questions in all sections and topics. Cluster questions include general questions and specific questions to develop and assess candidates' abilities from low to high levels. Cluster questions will exploit rich data sources, assess students' thinking in each field and across fields. These are changes in building a question bank for the assessment test.
Wrong answers do not count
The test scores are automatically graded by the ability assessment software. The test results are displayed on the computer screen after the candidate finishes the test or after the prescribed test time has expired. The total score for the entire test is 150, based on the total number of correct answers of the candidate. Each correct answer is worth 1 point, incorrect answers or no answers are not counted (test questions are not counted).
The test score is the total score of the 3 test sections, each of which is worth a maximum of 50 points. The score sheet includes the total score (maximum of 150 points) and 3 component scores: mathematics and data processing (quantitative thinking), literature - language (qualitative thinking), science or English.
Candidates take the test according to the instructions of Hanoi National University. Specifically, for 4-choice objective multiple-choice questions, candidates choose only one correct answer (A, B, C, D) for each question. For fill-in-the-blank questions, candidates fill in the answer they find in the corresponding blank box of the test question.
Professor Nguyen Tien Thao also said that the content of the HSA competency assessment test will be distributed according to the general education program knowledge as follows: grade 10 about 10%, grade 11 about 30%, grade 12 about 60%. The physics and biology topics alone can change within ± 5% according to the program allocation between grades. The English test of knowledge in the grade 12 program accounts for about 45%; general knowledge, high-level application in the program accounts for about 15%.
What is in the science section and the English section?
According to Professor Nguyen Tien Thao, in terms of structure, the HSA exam includes 2 mandatory parts. Part 1 is mathematics and data processing/quantitative thinking, with a time limit of 75 minutes, with 50 questions (35 objective multiple choice questions with 4 options and 15 fill-in-the-blank questions, not including unscored experimental questions), with a score of 50.
Part 2 is literature - language/qualitative thinking, with a time limit of 60 minutes. This part has 50 questions (4-choice objective test), including 25 single questions and 5 question clusters including 1 context with 5 questions, not including unscored experimental questions). This part is also graded on a 50-point scale.
2025 is the first year that the HSA assessment test includes part 3, which is a science or English option. Part 3 has a time limit of 60 minutes, with 50 questions (4-choice objective test and fill-in answer, not including unscored experimental questions), with a score of 50. Candidates can choose to take the science or English test when taking the test.
In the science section, candidates choose 3 out of 5 topics: physics, chemistry, biology, history, geography. Each topic has from 16 to 17 questions, including single questions and from 1 to 2 clusters of questions (including a context with 3 questions).
With the choice of 3 topics, candidates must choose 2 topics in the same field of natural sciences or social sciences, with 17 questions/topic. The remaining topic has 16 questions and is accompanied by an unscored test question. The topics of physics, chemistry, and biology have at least one fill-in-the-blank question/topic.
The English test consists of 50 multiple-choice questions with 4 options. Of these, there are 35 single questions and 3 sets of questions including a context with 5 questions on vocabulary, grammar, expression in written text, reading comprehension, situations, etc. The English test is designed to serve the recruitment of foreign language training programs.
