Dr. Moungi Bawendi was born in Paris and grew up in France, Tunisia, and the United States. He did his postdoctoral work at Bell Labs under Dr. Brus, before joining MIT in 1990 and becoming a professor in 1996.
Dr. Louise Brus began her scientific career on a US Navy scholarship, attending Rice and Columbia Universities. In 1972, she joined AT&T Bell Labs, where she worked for 23 years, spending much of her time researching nanocrystals.
Dr. Alexei Ekimov was born in the Soviet Union and studied at the Ioffe Institute of Physics and Technology. He then worked for the Vavilov Institute of Optics before moving to the United States and being appointed Chief Scientist at Nanocrystals Technology Inc. in 1999.
The prizes for medicine and physics were announced earlier this week, while the prizes for literature and peace will be announced in the coming days.
Quantum dots and other nanoparticles are used in LED lights and TV screens, and could also be used to guide surgeons to remove cancerous tissue, among other things.
The announcement from the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences comes after they accidentally revealed the names of the three winning scientists. Swedish newspaper Aftonbladet has named the three scientists who will receive the 2023 Nobel Prize in Chemistry.
