Strive to get rich, share and develop together

Starting with nothing, thanks to his will to progress, his creative spirit, and his ability to keep up with the times, farmer Le Van Giay (Hamlet 4, Long Khe Commune, Can Duoc District, Long An Province) has become rich on his homeland. With the economic development, he enthusiastically shares with everyone, helping the poor countryside come to life.

From hardship to rise

Mr. Giay's family has many siblings, he is the 12th. After completing his military service, he started to develop the family economy, taught himself electricity and made a living from this profession. During the day he went to work, at night he went to Ho Chi Minh City to study more to improve his skills. At the same time, he and his wife did farming on the land given by his parents.

Realizing that rice cultivation was not very effective, he boldly changed the crop structure. At that time, many people talked about it because no one in this area had done it like him, but he was still determined. He planted apples, the first crop was a success, and he bought 3 taels of gold. After a few years, he planted squash, leafy vegetables,... all of which were successful beyond expectations.

Mr. Giay said that Long Khe land has very good soil. At that time, all kinds of plants and vegetables grew well, and everything was sold as soon as they were planted, but the roads were not synchronized and transportation was difficult, so it was difficult to expand the area. Gradually, the State invested in transportation, so farming became easier and more effective.

Mr. Le Van Giay (Hamlet 4, Long Khe Commune, Can Duoc District) is a good farmer and businessman, always supporting and sharing knowledge with everyone.

By 2007, he increased the planting area to 6,000m2 , growing 4-5 crops per year, with a yield of more than 10 tons/crop. Up to now, he has 3 hectares of vegetables on both his own land and rented land. Thanks to the application of high technology in cultivation, in addition to the main vegetables, he also grows difficult items to supply the market.

Mr. Giay shared: “For agriculture today, if you want to get rich and be effective, I see two ways, one is to have a large cultivation area, the other is to apply modern science and technology”. Mr. Giay said that there was a time when he encountered difficulties because the green mustard (main crop) was infected with disease and died en masse even though there were only 4-5 days left until harvest.

At that time, this product was very rare in the market. Not giving up, he searched and researched many documents, learned from many sources, and participated in any training organization he heard about, combining folk experience. Thanks to that, he gradually overcame the above situation, and the economy grew more and more.

According to Mr. Giay, growing leafy vegetables depends 80% on the weather. Using shade nets helps prevent vegetables from being damaged during rains and limits pests and planthoppers from causing damage. In addition, he also uses an automatic irrigation system and produces according to organic and VietGAP standards. Mr. Giay's success has encouraged and boosted the spirit of people in the area.

Share, get rich together

Seeing Mr. Giay get rich with vegetables, many people followed his example. Whoever came to learn from his experience, he enthusiastically guided them, especially in the application of science and technology in production.

In 2017, he founded the Muoi Hai Safe Vegetable Cooperative and took on the position of Chairman of the Board of Directors and Director. He said: “The old saying goes, ‘buy with friends, sell with partners’. If you cooperate and unite, it will be easier to sell, and it will be easier to support and help each other.”

Thanks to the association into specialized areas, anyone who needs green mustard or sweet cabbage just needs to come here. The supply is not interrupted, so traders really like it. Currently, the cooperative has 60 members with an area of 30 hectares. He strictly ensures the safety of agricultural products, members must sign a commitment, if any household does not comply, they will not be paid for that crop. Thanks to that, the cooperative's products are increasingly favored and highly appreciated by the market. Recently, the cooperative's safe vegetable products have been successfully exported to the UK.

According to Mr. Giay, 1,000m2 of vegetables yielding 3 tons/crop is a good crop. On average, each household grows 6-9 crops/year, with some households growing 11 crops/year. With current market prices, farmers earn a profit of 5,000 VND/kg. It is normal for people growing 3,000-4,000m2 to earn a profit of several hundred million VND per year, many times higher than growing rice. "In the past, this area could be said to be the poorest in Hamlet 4, but thanks to growing vegetables, everyone is well-off, with spacious houses," said Mr. Giay.

For many years, Mr. Le Van Giay has always been enthusiastic in social activities. He is very "lucky" in mobilizing to build rural roads. Mieu Bridge connecting Phuoc Ly commune today is a spacious concrete bridge.

In the past, Mr. Giay was the one who asked for trees, cut planks to build bridges, helping to shorten the road from 7km to about 3km. When the locality mobilized support for poor households, students with difficult circumstances, etc., he enthusiastically participated. For many years, Mr. Le Van Giay was a good farmer and businessman at the provincial level./.
