The win helped Arsenal continue to maintain their unbeaten record in the 2023-2024 Premier League with 7 wins and 3 draws, rising to second place in the table, only 2 points behind the leader Tottenham (24 compared to 26). Tottenham is also unbeaten with 8 wins and 2 draws, along with Arsenal, the 2 teams that have not lost a match in the Premier League this season so far.
Coach Mikel Arteta used striker Nketiah to start instead of Gabriel Jesus (injured). But unexpectedly, in a day of sublime performance, the 24-year-old striker, who grew up in Arsenal's training center, scored a spectacular hat-trick.
Nketiah scored in the 28th, 50th and 58th minutes after perfect handling of the ball. The opening goal was a skillful turn in the penalty area, easily eliminating a Sheffield United defender, from a pass by Declan Rice. Early in the second half, Nketiah quickly increased the score to 2-0, before unleashing a dangerous long-range shot to increase the gap to 3-0 from a pass by Smith Rowe.
The goals that sealed the 5-0 win for Arsenal were scored by midfielder Fabio Vieira from the penalty spot in the 88th minute, and Japanese centre-back Tomiyasu in the 90+6th minute. Both Fabio Vieira and Tomiyasu were brought on by coach Mikel Arteta in the second half, after the match was all but decided by Nketiah's hat-trick.
With a resounding victory, Arsenal showed that they are a strong candidate in the race for the Premier League championship this season alongside Tottenham, Man City and Liverpool.
