In recent days, due to the impact of storms, heavy rains and whirlwinds have greatly affected the summer-autumn and autumn-winter rice fields in Hau Giang.
Continuous heavy rains have slowed down the harvest; rice productivity and quality have also decreased.
Along Highway 61 through Vi Thuy district, Hau Giang province, reporters can easily see people standing in the fields tying rice, waiting to harvest.
Ms. Tran Thi Ut (residing in Vi Binh commune) said that her family has more than 6,000 square meters of rice land. Heavy rains for many days have caused the rice to fall and rot due to flooding. For the past two days, her whole family has gone to the field and hired more workers to tie the rice up to avoid damage while waiting for the combine harvester.
"Normally, each large hectare can yield 600kg. With flooding like this, we have to tie the rice into bunches and raise them up, hoping to salvage half of it. This crop is considered a loss," Ms. Ut said sadly.
Before tying the rice, Ms. Ut's husband used the pump to drain the water from the field, so that when the rain stopped and the sun rose, he could use the combine harvester to harvest the rice.
Ms. Ut said, working hard in the field from morning until after 3pm, 4 people could only tie up a quarter of the field.
According to the woman, every year at this time there is rain but it does not cause much damage. If the storm is known in advance, farmers will spray more pesticides to strengthen the rice plants, reducing some of the damage.
Currently, the summer-autumn and autumn-winter crops are in the harvest stage, but many households are late due to rain and cannot cut rice.
"There are no people to hire to tie the rice because everyone who has fields is trying to use them as their own," said Ms. Ut.
About 100m from Ms. Ut's rice field is Mr. Ly Thanh Tien's rice field. He said that the rice he is planting is the third crop, but due to continuous heavy rain, the harvest is delayed by 2 days.
"It rained a lot and then the flood water came, so no matter how hard I tried to pump water out of the fields, the rice was still flooded and collapsed. I have 15 hectares of rice fields, if the weather was not affected, the yield would be 10 tons, but with this storm, all the rice has collapsed, so I estimate I can only harvest 6 tons," said Mr. Tien.
According to Mr. Tien, rice is currently purchased by traders at 7,500 VND/kg. After deducting all expenses, he only has enough to pay for fertilizer, buy oil to pump out water, hire people to lift the rice...
"For more than 3 months now, I've been working rice for free," Mr. Tien confided sadly.
According to statistics from the Department of Cultivation, Plant Protection and Forestry of Hau Giang province, heavy rain and strong winds have destroyed more than 140 hectares of ripe summer-autumn rice in Long My district.
According to data, more than 46 hectares of autumn-winter rice were flooded and fell in Long My and Chau Thanh A districts... In addition, heavy rain and strong winds also felled many areas of sugarcane, fruit trees, vegetables...
The provincial Department of Crop Production, Plant Protection and Forestry has directed the District, Town and City Crop Production and Plant Protection Stations to strengthen field visits, promptly record and monitor daily damage reports. In addition, it is necessary to mobilize farmers to reinforce embankments, dams, clear water flows, actively pump to prevent flooding for rice and other crops, and at the same time take advantage of favorable weather to quickly harvest ripe rice areas to limit damage.
