First footage from James Cameron's blockbuster 'Avatar: Fire and Ash'

James Cameron has been filming the Avatar sequels back to back, so the remaining three installments of this supernatural sci-fi series are coming out on time.

CinemaCon attendees were given 3D glasses to watch the first trailer. The stunning footage opens on Pandora and introduces two new Na'vi tribes: the Wind Traders, who fly through the sky, and their enemies, the Fire People, who ride the flying creatures Ikran. As the battle in the sky begins, one Na'vi is shot with a flaming arrow and killed.

"We can't live like this, baby. We can't live with this hate," Jake Sully told his lover Neytiri.

Avatar follows the Jake Sully (Sam Worthington) and Neytiri (Zoe Saldaña) clan on the alien moon Pandora. Avatar: Fire and Ash picks up shortly after the events of Avatar: The Way of Water , the film tells the story of a conflict between the blue-skinned aliens known as the Na'vi against the evil Resource Development Agency (RDA)... The war takes them across all sorts of vast terrain, ranging from oceans to forests, mountains, and skies.

Saldaña took the CinemaCon stage to show off some of the stunning footage and set the stage for the third installment. James Cameron wasn't in attendance as he was putting the finishing touches on Avatar 3 , but he appeared in a pre-recorded video to tell attendees about the third installment: "The Sully family is really put to the test in this one as they face not only human invaders but new enemies as well."

Cameron apologized for not being able to make it to Las Vegas for CinemaCon. "Unfortunately I can't make it, but I'm in New Zealand finishing Avatar: Fire and Ash . I think we can all agree that my time is well spent, because that movie comes out on December 19. I hope it can be a boost for theater owners, as we're still struggling after the double whammy of the pandemic and streaming," Cameron said in the video.

Avatar premiered in 2009, with its sequel Avatar: The Way of Water not due until 2022. Both have grossed more than $2 billion each globally, making them two of the highest-grossing films in history. If the third film follows a similar path, Avatar will be the only franchise in history to have three films gross more than $2 billion each. Disney's Marvel Cinematic Universe has two films, Avengers: Endgame (2019) and Avengers: Infinity War (2018), that have achieved this feat.

Avatar: Fire and Ash will hit theaters before Christmas (December 19, 2025). Avatar 4 is scheduled to hit theaters on December 21, 2029, and Avatar 5 is scheduled to hit theaters on December 19, 2031.
