1. Licorice
Licorice has long been used as an herbal remedy for a number of digestive problems. However, according to the National Center for Complementary and Integrative Medicine (USA), long-term consumption of licorice root or licorice candy can cause high blood pressure and low potassium levels.
Additionally, licorice is also thought to interact with certain blood pressure medications and reduce their effectiveness.
Hypertensive patients should check their blood pressure regularly.
2. Ginseng
Without the advice and supervision of a medical professional, it is best for patients with high blood pressure to avoid using ginseng because the effects of this food on the disease are still unclear.
In low doses, ginseng has been shown to increase blood pressure in people with low blood pressure, while high doses can lower blood pressure in healthy people.
Some other studies have shown that ginseng has a neutral effect on blood pressure. Therefore, it is best for patients with blood pressure problems not to use ginseng without a prescription from a medical professional.
3. Guarana seeds
Compared to coffee beans, guarana seeds are said to have four times more caffeine. A report published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition found that high doses of caffeine can cause blood pressure to spike within hours of consumption, especially in people who are not used to caffeine and those with high blood pressure.
Therefore, foods with high caffeine content such as guarana seeds are not suitable for people with high blood pressure. It is best for patients to avoid using this type of supplement on their own.
