Little-known habits that can easily weaken the kidneys.

Báo Thanh niênBáo Thanh niên13/11/2024

The kidneys' primary function is to filter waste and excess fluid from the body, while also balancing blood sugar and mineral levels. However, the kidneys are also susceptible to damage. Certain daily habits can impair kidney health.

Chronic kidney disease is a condition in which kidney function declines over time. In the early stages, patients often don't notice any symptoms. But in some cases, patients may experience fatigue, weight loss, or foamy urine, according to the health website Verywell Health (USA).

Abuse of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) can increase the risk of chronic kidney disease.

When chronic kidney disease has progressed to an advanced stage, patients will experience nausea, vomiting, frequent urination, weakness, dry skin, swollen legs, muscle cramps, and many other symptoms. Factors that increase the risk of chronic kidney disease include family history, diabetes, and high blood pressure. Experts believe that obesity also increases the risk of chronic kidney disease because it makes those affected more susceptible to diabetes and high blood pressure.

One of the less commonly known causes of chronic kidney disease is the overuse of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), such as aspirin, ibuprofen, naproxen, or diclofenac. If you already have the disease, these medications can worsen your symptoms.

Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are commonly used to relieve pain, such as persistent headaches or joint pain. While short-term use may cause some side effects like stomach ulcers, it is generally considered safe.

However, long-term use of these medications can have adverse effects on the kidneys. Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) can reduce blood flow to the kidneys. Over time, this can damage kidney function, especially in people with high blood pressure or diabetes.

Therefore, to minimize kidney damage, experts recommend using the medication at a moderately low dose. If a low dose is effective, then no more than that should be taken. Patients should also avoid taking the medication for extended periods, avoid combining multiple types of NSAIDs, and drink plenty of water.

Other habits that increase the risk of chronic kidney disease include smoking and eating a lot of processed meat. Additionally, a high salt intake leads to high blood pressure. High blood pressure, over the long term, also damages the kidneys and causes chronic kidney disease, according to Verywell Health .
