ADMISSION EXAMINATION FOR STUDENTS GRADUATING FROM JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL IN HANH AN ISLAND COMMUNE

For the 2024-2025 school year, the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Education and Training will implement both admission methods (selection based on academic records) and entrance exams for 10th grade, depending on the locality. Accordingly, the Department will organize a selection process for 10th grade students graduating from junior high school in Thanh An island commune, Can Gio district. These students can register for admission to Thanh An Junior High School - High School located in Thanh An commune. If they wish to attend high school outside the island commune, they will have to participate in the entrance exam like students from other localities.

Ninth-grade students in Ho Chi Minh City will take the 10th-grade entrance exam on June 6-7.

Mr. Nguyen Ngoc Xuan, Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Can Gio District, said that after the 10th grade entrance exams in recent years, a few students did not get admitted to Thanh An Secondary and High School. The exam results of these students were not significantly different from the cutoff score, about 2 points. Meanwhile, if these students pursue other educational models after completing secondary school, such as continuing education or vocational schools/colleges, they face limitations and difficulties in commuting to the mainland. Therefore, the district has proposed to the Department of Education to implement a selection method for students graduating from secondary school in Thanh An island commune to facilitate their continued education.

Additionally, students who have completed lower secondary education in other localities within Ho Chi Minh City will participate in the 10th grade entrance exam held on June 6-7. They will take three subjects: Vietnamese Literature, Mathematics, and a Foreign Language if applying for a regular 10th grade class, and a specialized subject exam if applying for a specialized class, or an integrated subject exam if applying for an integrated English program at the upper secondary level.

ADDING A CATEGORY OF STUDENTS ELIGIBLE FOR DIRECT ADMISSION

In addition, for the 2024 10th grade entrance exam, the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Education and Training has added a direct admission category for students who have won national or international sports awards organized by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism or who have been nominated by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism to participate in competitions. This adjustment aims to achieve the goal of developing the sports movement and creating a source of athletes for the city's sports schools.

Therefore, the subjects eligible for direct admission to grade 10 include: students graduating from junior high school in the 2023-2024 school year in Ho Chi Minh City and who are students with disabilities (with a certificate as prescribed); students who have won national or international awards in culture, arts, sports, or national science and technology competitions for junior and senior high school students (national awards organized or co-organized by the Ministry of Education and Training, or organized by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism; international awards where students are nominated by the Ministry of Education and Training or the Department of Education and Training, or by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism).

High school students will apply for direct admission with 3 preferences to public high schools near their place of residence in the city (excluding specialized high schools, high schools with specialized classes, and schools implementing the high-quality program "Advanced School, International Integration").

Specifically, students who win prizes in national-level science and technology competitions (for junior and senior high school students organized by the Ministry of Education and Training) or international competitions (in corresponding subjects within the national general education curriculum) are allowed to register for direct admission to all public high schools in Ho Chi Minh City (except specialized high schools).

INCREASED APPLICATIONS FOR SPECIALIZED CLASSES AND INTEGRATED ENGLISH CLASSES

According to this year's 10th grade admission regulations, candidates are allowed to register for a maximum of 6 preferences (a reduction of 1 preference compared to previous years' 10th grade admissions), including 3 preferences for regular 10th grade classes and 3 preferences for specialized classes or 3 preferences for integrated English programs.

It is known that in previous years, each candidate could register for a maximum of 7 choices for 10th grade, including 3 choices for regular 10th grade classes, 2 choices for specialized 10th grade classes (or 2 choices for integrated English 10th grade classes), and 2 choices for non-specialized 10th grade classes in specialized high schools. However, this year, in accordance with the regulations for specialized high schools issued by the Ministry of Education and Training, Le Hong Phong and Tran Dai Nghia specialized high schools will not recruit non-specialized 10th grade classes.

Therefore, Mr. Le Hoai Nam, Deputy Director of the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Education and Training, said that the Department has calculated that each candidate will have a maximum of 6 choices for admission to grade 10. Of these, 3 choices will be for regular grade 10 classes as before, while the number of choices for specialized or integrated grade 10 classes will increase from 2 to 3, adding more choices to create as many opportunities as possible for candidates.

ADDITIONAL RECRUITMENT BEFORE THE START OF THE NEW SCHOOL YEAR

In addition, depending on the actual number of students applying for admission to high schools, the Department of Education and Training will decide on supplementary admissions for candidates who failed all three regular choices and will issue guidelines to ensure the rights of candidates with high exam scores and to fill the enrollment quotas for schools that still have many vacancies. To implement supplementary admissions in phase 2, the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Education and Training will calculate how to shorten the time for announcing the results of this year's 10th grade entrance exam compared to previous years.

Mr. Le Hoai Nam added that the supplementary admissions may not be limited to regular 10th grade classes but could also include specialized and integrated English classes. Depending on the number of applications received for specialized and integrated classes, the Department will decide on supplementary admissions and issue guidelines immediately after applicants complete their applications, or organize supplementary entrance exams after the end of the first semester of the 2024-2025 school year.

According to the leaders of the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Education and Training, the supplementary recruitment creates opportunities for students in the city who are from disadvantaged backgrounds or who made mistakes in the application process to continue their education at public high schools. At the same time, it aims to gradually achieve the goal of recruiting enough students to meet the assigned quotas at each school.

Change the way you study for the Literature subject.

According to the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Education and Training, the structure of the 2024 10th grade entrance exam, the final year of implementing the 2006 general education program at the lower secondary level, remains stable compared to previous years. Only the Literature exam has been adjusted in the use of source material in the literary analysis section. Specifically, this year's exam will require students to analyze and interpret a specific work or excerpt from a work in the textbook, instead of requiring candidates to choose a work (or excerpt) according to the exam's requirements.

With this adjustment, teacher Nguyen Thi Mai Huong from Huynh Khuong Ninh Secondary School (District 1) said that students need to review and thoroughly understand each key text in textbooks volumes 1 and 2 (reviewing texts in a way that focuses on detailed understanding, grasping the structure, theme, and main arguments of the text, and practicing analytical and argumentative skills...). Only then should they further practice connecting/linking to an excerpt, another work, or real-life situations, or the impact of the work on themselves in a way that is appropriate, profound, and practical.

Meanwhile, teacher Nguyen Duc Uy from Tran Van On Secondary School (District 1) noted that when using materials in textbooks, students should avoid guessing exam questions or "predicting" topics, which can lead to rote learning, memorizing specific answers, and relying on model essays.

Students need to plan how to effectively review the knowledge from the entire 9th grade school year, not just study whatever they like. For any areas they haven't fully grasped, they should discuss them with teachers and classmates to gain a clearer understanding. They should practice according to the teacher's instructions and read additional reference materials whenever they have free time.

Reviewing the lesson content systematically, by topic, with appropriate comparisons and connections will help students remember the material better. Literary works should be arranged according to periods, with appropriate examples cited related to themes such as nature, life, and human qualities. Always pay attention to the artistic elements in poems and prose so that when writing literary essays, students avoid simply retelling or paraphrasing the story.
