Which cities in the world charge tourists?

Hoi An sells tickets to the ancient town for 120,000 VND for international visitors and 80,000 VND for domestic visitors.

But unlike Hoi An, which always tries to attract a large number of international tourists, Venice charges a fee to limit the number of tourists after protests by local residents who complained that too many tourists affected their quality of life.

Before the pandemic, the number of daily visitors to Venice's old town was often twice the number of residents.

Last year, Venice authorities announced that the introduction of an entrance fee to the old town was set for January 16, 2023. However, earlier this year, the city council said the plan had been postponed again, with no specific implementation date set.

At that time, the Italian press said that if Venice collected tickets, it would become the first city in the world to charge visitors an entrance fee. Therefore, Venice temporarily stopped applying the above policy, and Hoi An ancient town replaced Venice as the first and only city in the world to sell tickets to the core heritage area.

Back to Venice's ticket sales, entrance tickets are proposed to be sold to visitors who do not stay overnight in the old town, while those who stay overnight in hotels have to pay a tourist tax.

Tourism expert: 'Selling tickets to visit Hoi An is absurd and abnormal!'

Revenue from tickets will go towards services that benefit Venice residents including maintenance, cleaning and reducing the cost of living.

Some groups of people will not have to pay during the day, including residents of the Veneto region, students and those visiting family members residing in the old town.

Entrance tickets will cost between 3 and 10 euros depending on the season. Fines for ticket evasion range from 50 to 300 euros.

Venice temporarily suspends plans to limit visitors by charging entrance fees

Every year, 20 million foreign tourists visit Venice - a city built in the 5th century, spread over 118 small islands, which was a major trading port in the 10th century. The whole of Venice is an architectural masterpiece, with 200 large and small canals connecting to the Grand Canal.

UNESCO has designated Venice and its northeastern lagoon as a World Heritage Site. Venice was built on the edge of the sea to escape wars and is one of the most extraordinary cities built during the Middle Ages. The small islands are organized into a unique urban landscape within a network of canals.

Many ancient cities in the world also do not charge visitors entrance fees. Tickets are only sold when visitors enter each monument, as Hoi An has been doing in recent years. For example, the city of Athens has a history of 7,000 years, the cradle of Western civilization, where every step visitors can touch ancient relics. However, the city does not sell tickets for visitors to enter Athens. Tickets are only sold when visitors visit attractions such as the Parthenon, Acropolis Hill, Ancient Agora Square, Temple of Zeus...

Many ancient cities in Asia also do not charge entrance fees.

According to the explanation of Chairman of Hoi An City People's Committee Nguyen Van Son, revenue from entrance tickets serves the preservation, restoration, and renovation of relics, infrastructure improvements in the old town, organizing tourism events, as well as supporting people in restoring and renovating houses... At the same time, the mandatory purchase of tickets for all visitors when visiting Hoi An ancient town is to ensure fairness for the locality and visitors.
