Papaya is a nutritious fruit but eating too much can cause digestive problems, allergies, low blood sugar or interact with medications.

Papaya is known as a superfood because of its many health benefits and rich nutritional profile. Packed with antioxidants, fiber and vitamins, this fruit can do wonders when eaten in a balanced way.

But like anything else, overdoing it on papaya can be harmful. Eating too much of this fruit can lead to some unwanted side effects.

Stomach pain or digestive problems

Papaya is rich in fiber and a digestive enzyme called papain, which helps break down proteins. While these properties make papaya great for digestion in moderation, eating too much can lead to stomach pain, bloating, or diarrhea.

High fiber content can overload the digestive system, especially if the body is not used to it.

Allergic reaction

Some people are sensitive to papain and may experience an allergic reaction if they eat large amounts of the fruit. One study confirmed that papaya pollen can actually cause respiratory problems.

Symptoms may include itching, swelling, or difficulty breathing. People with latex allergies should also be cautious, as papaya contains compounds that can cross-react with latex.

Risk of hypoglycemia

Papaya contains natural compounds that can help regulate blood sugar levels, which is a benefit for people with diabetes. However, consuming too much can also cause blood sugar levels to drop too low, leading to hypoglycemia.

A 2012 study found that consuming papaya can actually lower blood sugar levels, which can be especially dangerous for people taking blood sugar-lowering medications.

Impact on pregnant women

Green or unripe papaya contains latex, which can act as a uterine stimulant and lead to complications during pregnancy, such as contractions or even miscarriage in severe cases.

Although fully ripe papaya is generally considered safe when consumed in moderation, eating too much can still be risky, especially in sensitive pregnancies.

Drug Interactions

Papaya may interact with certain medications, especially blood thinners and medications used to control blood sugar levels.

Eating too much papaya will amplify the effects of these medications, increasing the risk of side effects such as excessive bleeding or dangerously low blood sugar.
