The "cultural ambassadors" at Hung Temple

Việt NamViệt Nam03/04/2025

Although the main festival hasn't arrived yet, the number of visitors flocking to the Hung Temple Historical Site these days is quite large. This is the time when the work of the guides and interpreters at the Hung Temple Historical Site becomes more demanding, but each person is conscious of their responsibility to the task assigned to them. They not only introduce and convey information to help visitors understand the cultural values of the ancestral land but also contribute to building an image of the friendly and hospitable people of the ancestral land, creating a positive impression for each visitor when they come to the cradle of the nation.

Officials from the Department of Relics, Culture, and Festivals Management, Hung Temple Historical Site, introduce the legend of Mother Au Co to visitors at the Lower Temple.

Guiding a group of tourists from the BNI Vietnam business networking organization on a pilgrimage to Hung Temple in mid-February of the lunar calendar, Ms. Nguyen Thi Van Anh - from the Department of Relics, Culture, and Festivals Management - gracefully wore a traditional ao dai dress, gently conveying information about the cultural and historical values and readily answering tourists' questions related to the temples, shrines, and artifacts preserved at the Hung Vuong Museum, helping tourists broaden their understanding of the country's history and culture.

Ms. Van Anh shared: "To guide tourists visiting Hung Temple, each staff member like us must be fully equipped with knowledge of the history and culture of the Hung King era, the Hung King worshiping beliefs, as well as the history of the relics and artifacts displayed at Hung Temple in order to answer tourists' questions. At the same time, each person must have the skills of a tour guide."

Officials from the Department of Relics, Culture, and Festivals Management introduce the Hung Vuong Mausoleum to visitors.

Lawyer Pham Thanh Long, head of the BNI Vietnam business networking delegation, reported on their visit to Hung Temple: "Our delegation of nearly 100 BNI staff members today is very green, clean, and beautiful. Our impression upon arriving here is that Hung Temple is very green, clean, and beautiful. The guides were very enthusiastic and helped us gain a deeper understanding of the Hung King era, as well as the Hung Kings and our ancestors who contributed to building the nation."

The students listened as officials from the Department of Relics, Culture, and Festivals Management introduced them to the bronze drums on display at the Hung Vuong Museum, Hung Temple Historical Site.

Besides guiding and explaining to tour groups, the guides and interpreters at the historical site also guide and explain things to students, domestic and international tourists. This work requires not only perseverance in learning and honing skills but also love and passion to truly become "ambassadors" carrying the cultural values of the Hung King era to visitors.

The team of guides and interpreters belonging to the Department of Relics, Culture, and Festivals Management of the Hung Temple Historical Site currently consists of over 30 people, all of whom are civil servants with university degrees or higher. These individuals not only possess in-depth knowledge of the Hung King era in general but also have specific knowledge of each detail and architectural feature of the Hung Temple Historical Site complex; the characteristics of its formation, significance, and historical and cultural value of each location and space within the site.

For example, when talking about the gate of Hung Temple, tour guides not only need to remember the construction date in the second year of Khai Dinh's reign (1917), but also need to know the gate's architectural structure: it is built in the style of an arched vault, 8.5m high, with two levels and eight roofs, covered with imitation tile pipes, and in the middle of the first level there is a large inscription "Cao Son Canh Hanh," meaning "climbing the high mountain to see the vast distance."

Upon reaching the Lower Temple, the story of the origin of the "compatriots" must be conveyed, linked to the legend of Mother Au Co giving birth to a hundred eggs, which later hatched into 100 sons, originating from here. Following this path, climbing hundreds of stone steps, nearly 175 meters up to the summit of Nghia Linh, hundreds of stories of historical and cultural relics are skillfully conveyed to visitors from all over by the tour guides.

According to Pham Thi Hoang Oanh, Deputy Director of the Hung Temple Historical Relic Area: "To improve the quality and skills of staff working as guides and interpreters at Hung Temple, this year we have coordinated with Hung Vuong University and the Association of Tourist Guides to open training courses to enhance the skills of guides and interpreters at Hung Temple. Furthermore, every year the Relic Area organizes training for those registered to work as photographers and electric vehicle drivers, providing them with basic knowledge of rituals, culture, and history of the Relic Area so they can pass it on to tourists."
