Ms. Luu Nguyet Hong was born in 1950 in Vinh Quoi commune, Nga Nam town. In 1965, at the age of 15, Ms. Hong joined the Revolution. The first job that the female guerrilla was assigned by the commander was to be in charge of the medical work of the Nga Nam special forces unit. Ms. Hong said: “Every job is to serve the fight.

When my comrades were injured, I personally bandaged and treated them, then took the injured person's gun and continued fighting the enemy. I was young and small, so shooting was a problem. The most common type of gun at that time was the "red-headed" rifle. Even strong people would have sore shoulders when shooting, let alone weak people. However, there was a battle where I fired hundreds of bullets. At that time, I didn't think about sore shoulders, I just aimed at the enemy to avenge my comrades and my compatriots."

Ms. Hong fought in many battles and killed many enemies. The enemy in Nga Nam District were terrified whenever they heard her name and tried every way to capture or kill her. Wherever they went, they would capture and brutally beat any woman named Hong with the motto "If you miss a hundred times, you will catch the right one". That's why she always had a grenade with her, so that if she encountered the enemy, she could pull it out and "cut it in half".

In 1968, Ms. Luu Nguyet Hong was honored to be admitted to the Vietnam Workers' Party and elected to the Party Cell. A few months later, Ms. Hong was elected to hold the position of Deputy Secretary of the Party Cell... During the General Offensive and Uprising in Spring 1968, Ms. Hong and her comrades surrounded Nga Nam Sub-region for 52 days and nights. Also during those days, she was the one who lowered the enemy's 3-striped flag in Nga Nam Sub-region and proudly raised the flag of the National Liberation Front of South Vietnam. That was the happiest moment of her life.

“Every battle is memorable, but the one I remember most is the battle on the 23rd of the 11th lunar month in 1967 at Nga Nam Sub-region. Before going to battle, seeing the fierce nature of this battle, I took off my earrings and gave them to my mother. When she asked, I said I would bring them with me in case they got caught on a tree branch and lost them. In that battle, according to the agreement, the shots were to be fired at exactly 0:00, but because the artillery brothers got lost, the battle did not begin until 2:00. At that time, the enemy took the initiative to counterattack, so the soldiers and guerrillas had to retreat to defend themselves in the dark leaves in Long My (now Hau Giang ) and fight with the enemy until 2-3:00 in the afternoon when they withdrew. At that time, I had just had an appendectomy a month ago, so I was a bit exhausted, but I was determined not to leave the battlefield. Sometimes I was so tired that I fell asleep. When I suddenly woke up, I realized that I was sleeping between two comrades who had sacrificed themselves. When the enemy retreated, I lowered the enemy flag and planted the flag of the National Front. “Liberating South Vietnam on the roof of Nga Nam Sub-region. After this battle, I was honored to join the Party and was elected as an Emulation Fighter of the province,” Ms. Hong beamed as she recalled.

Talking about the historic days of April 1975, Ms. Luu Nguyet Hong said: “In those days, I was a member of the Steering Committee to attack Phu Loc Sub-region. Following the instructions of superiors, on April 29, armed teams were established with the people to attack the enemy's posts and weapons.”

At that time, to reinforce Soc Trang, the enemy from Bac Lieu moved up with 28 GMC trucks loaded with soldiers, but when they reached Phu Loc, they were intercepted by our forces, forcing them to flee in disarray. In the province, according to the plan, at 5:30 p.m. on April 29, 1975, the Key Command ordered troops to advance to the front line to simultaneously open fire at G-hour (3 a.m. on April 30, 1975) to attack the enemy.

By the morning of April 30, 1975, the revolutionary forces had occupied many streets and launched attacks, besieging key targets such as the National Police Department, the Field Police Company, Bach Dang Camp, Khanh Hung Sub-region...

The enemy's resistance gradually weakened. At that time, the news of Saigon's complete liberation and President Duong Van Minh's unconditional surrender spread rapidly, further encouraging the fighting spirit of the army and people of Soc Trang . Immediately, the key command directed the three attack prongs to coordinate closely, both attacking and calling for surrender to gain the fastest victory. At key positions, armed units seized the opportunity to rush forward and capture the target.

At 12 noon on April 30, 1975, Ba Xuyen Sub-region sent representatives to meet with the Liberation Army Command (at the bus station to Bac Lieu) to surrender. At 2:00 p.m. on April 30, 1975, the two lieutenant colonels of the 953rd Ranger Group and the Regiment Commander of the Logistics Regiment along with the entire Command Board of the two units laid down their weapons and surrendered. This was also the time when Soc Trang town was completely liberated...

During the years of fighting, the heroine Luu Nguyet Hong was wounded twice. That wound still torments her every time the weather changes. When you go to Nga Nam and ask about Ba Hong, everyone will know her, because she is an example of selfless fighting, the pride of the people here. After her homeland was liberated, she continued to work locally.

In 1977, she was assigned to be the Head of the Inspection Committee of Thanh Tri District Party Committee. In 1996, she was transferred to the Department of Labor, Invalids and Social Affairs of Soc Trang province and worked until her retirement. In 2005, "Nga Nam Female Guerrilla" Luu Nguyet Hong was awarded the title of Hero of the People's Armed Forces by the President...
