Recently, the news that Vietnam has discovered 40 gold mines in the Northwest region with gold reserves of up to about 30 tons worth more than 3 billion USD has attracted public attention. Of the 40 gold mines above, there are 14 medium mines and 26 small mines.
In addition to these new gold mines, Vietnam currently has about 500 gold mining sites nationwide. Of these, the following gold mines are estimated to have the largest gold reserves:
Bong Mieu Gold Mine (Quang Nam): Reserves of more than 20 tons
According to mineral exploration results approved by the National Mineral Reserves Assessment Council, Vietnam has about 25,084 kg of original gold.
In particular, the statistical results of the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment (now the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment) show that Bong Mieu gold mine, Tam Lanh commune, Phu Ninh district, Quang Nam province is the gold mine with the largest reserves in the country.
Bong Mieu gold mine in Tam Lanh commune, Phu Ninh district, Quang Nam province is considered a “golden land”. This gold mine is considered an important economic source for Quang Nam, creating many jobs and contributing greatly to the provincial budget.

Bong Mieu gold mine area is managed by Bong Mieu Gold Mining Company Limited, which has been exploited since 1992. By March 2016, the mining license of this mine had expired and Bong Mieu Gold Mining Company Limited was also declared bankrupt in 2018. Accordingly, the gold mine was not strictly managed, so people from many places came to mine illegally.
By March 2022, the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment had decided to allow Quang Nam province to close the Bong Mieu gold mine. In August 2022, Quang Nam province invested nearly 20 billion VND to close the mine.
Dak Sa "gold mountain" in Phuoc Son (Quang Nam): Reserves of more than 7 tons
The Dak Sa gold mine in Phuoc Son (Quang Nam) is also one of the largest gold mines in Vietnam. Phuoc Son gold mine has reserves of more than 7 tons. In 2012, the net gold output from this mine reached 1-1.2 tons/year, with gold ore containing 5-15g of gold/ton of ore.

Currently, Phuoc Son Gold Company Limited is the licensed entity to mine gold in two areas, Bai Dat and Bai Go, belonging to Dak Sa gold mine, within the framework of the Gold Ore Mining Project in Phuoc Son area.
However, in early February 2025, the Vietnam Minerals Department sent an official dispatch to the People's Committee of Quang Nam province requesting comments on the Project to close the original gold ore mine in the Dak Sa area.
Pac Lang Gold Mine (Bac Kan)
Pac Lang is a large original gold mine, nearly 25 km2 wide, located in two communes Duc Van and Thuong Quan, Ngan Son district (Bac Kan).
Pac Lang gold mine was discovered and exploited in the 19th century. The main mine is located on the southern slope of a 1,090 m high mountain, about 5 km straight from National Highway 3, and about 20 km by road.
Pac Lang mine has a complex geological structure, containing gold ores with high purity. This attracts the attention of many investors and geological scientists.
From 2007 to the end of 2011, the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment licensed a joint venture of ARV Company (UK), Vietnam Minerals Corporation and Bac Kan Minerals Joint Stock Company (Bac Kan Minerals Company) to explore gold reserves and associated minerals at Pac Lang gold mine.
After more than 4 years of exploring the Pac Lang gold mine, Bac Kan Mineral Company invested 63 billion VND to organize a joint venture to explore and protect the mine. All documents and exploration results have been reported to the competent authorities.
Gold mine around Doi Bu (Hoa Binh): Reserves of 10 tons
The original gold mines are concentrated in the northern mountainous region. The areas with fairly concentrated gold mineralization are around Doi Bu (Hoa Binh) such as Cao Ram, Da Bac, Kim Boi with a total reserve of about 10 tons.
According to the assessment of the Ministry of Industry, this is a promising gold area that needs investment in surveying, exploring, exploiting, selecting, processing and forming a gold industrial zone with a capacity of about 1 ton of gold/year.
Na Pai Gold Mine (Lang Son): Reserves of 3.3 tons
Na Pai gold mine is located in Bac Son district, Lang Son province, is one of the important gold mines in the Northeast region of Vietnam. This gold mine is also far from residential areas and located in deep forests.
Currently, Na Pai has been exploited in the traditional way and without the support of modern means. The mining output is about 0.8-1.5 tons of gold per year.
