According to the organizers, UPU letters that win high prizes are often letters with unique ideas, clear arguments, and simple yet expressive writing.
The theme of the 54th UPU Letter Writing Competition 2025 is “Imagine you are the ocean. Write a letter to someone, explaining why and how they should take good care of you and protect you”.
In English: “Imagine you are the ocean. Write a letter to someone explaining why and how they should take good care of you”.
With this year’s theme, students will transform into the ocean to raise issues they are facing, the most prominent of which is marine pollution. Students should use their imagination and unlimited creativity to talk, confide, remind people about the role of the ocean, and share solutions and specific actions to protect the ocean, seas and marine ecosystems; demonstrating the responsibility of the young generation in preserving nature, for sustainable development.
“The fact that you were able to give a reason that compelled you to write the letter (by showing the benefits and reality of the ocean) and how (through specific actions, proposing creative and effective solutions) means that you have thoroughly solved the important problem of protecting the ocean for the survival of the planet and the survival of all humanity,” the representative of the Jury noted.
According to the organizers, the letter should be written in clear, coherent, and emotional sentences; avoid writing letters that present information, list, or generalize. A letter with many vivid details and reasonable comparisons will be more attractive, appealing, and convincing to the reader.
The writer also needs to be proactive in presenting his or her thoughts, feelings, and issues in the most convincing way. "A high-prize winning letter is usually a letter with unique ideas, clear arguments, and simple yet expressive writing style," emphasized the representative of the Jury.
In addition to the content, contestants must also comply with a number of regulations to have a valid entry. In particular, the letter must be a creative product of the individual student, written in prose form on the theme of the contest (not published in a newspaper or book), no longer than 800 words.
Entries written in a foreign language must be accompanied by a Vietnamese translation. The jury will judge according to the Vietnamese version. In addition, the entry must be presented clearly, neatly, and handwritten on one side of the paper (note: do not write on the back, you can write on multiple pages, number the pages, and staple them to avoid confusion). Entries typed or photocopied are considered invalid.
Each entry must be placed in a postage stamped envelope, clearly stating the sender's address, recipient's address and postal code (11611) and sent via the Vietnam Post office system. The envelope must clearly state: Entry letter for the 54th UPU International Letter Writing Competition (2025).
