Currently, it is the time to register for admission and adjust admission wishes on the General Admission Support System of the Ministry of Education and Training. Associate Professor, Dr. Nguyen Thu Thuy, Director of the Department of Higher Education, Ministry of Education and Training, has discussed and advised candidates on how to register to have a high chance of being admitted.
Reporter (PV): Madam, the 2023 University Admissions Regulations have made some technical adjustments to increase opportunities for candidates. What should students pay attention to when registering their admission wishes on the system?
Associate Professor, Dr. Nguyen Thu Thuy: When registering for admission on the General Admission Support System of the Ministry of Education and Training (MOET), candidates do not need to choose between admission methods or combinations as before, but only need to register for the school and major they want. Candidates need to provide all necessary evidence, if any, about priority subjects, priority regions, foreign language certificates... (in addition to high school score data and high school graduation exam results updated by the MOET)... At that time, the system will automatically process and choose the most optimal combination and method.

The reason why candidates do not have to choose a combination or method is to avoid mistakes and confusion. Last year, there were some candidates who registered for early admission and were admitted conditionally, but when checking that major, they forgot to check the box for early admission. This is a mistake we encountered, and then the resolution of the consequences was extremely complicated. Because when they did not pass that wish, candidates would fall into the following wishes. And then the question would arise: Why did you pass but not let me enroll? We want to minimize similar technical errors for candidates.
The second point to note is the regional priority points. Candidates will be applied this point for 2 consecutive years (the year of the high school graduation exam and the following year). With the priority points for subjects and regions, based on the high school graduation exam scores or academic transcript scores (on a 30-point scale), if the total score of the candidate is 22.5 or higher, the priority points of the candidates will decrease linearly. Thus, if the candidates have already achieved 30 points, they do not need to add priority points anymore. These are two new points that candidates need to pay attention to in order to choose the most suitable wishes.
PV: Currently, it is the time to register for admission and change admission wishes on the General Admission Support System of the Ministry of Education and Training. What registration strategy should candidates have to limit risks?
Associate Professor, Dr. Nguyen Thu Thuy: Because there is no limit to the number of times you can adjust your preferences, we advise candidates not to choose only one preference. This has happened in previous years when there were candidates who were very confident that they could be admitted, even conditionally admitted, but did not carefully study the preliminary selection conditions, so when checked, it led to unnecessary mistakes.
Therefore, candidates should set a number of wishes and spread them evenly across groups of schools with different levels of competition, do not put all wishes into "top" schools. This can be considered a "strategy" to increase the effectiveness and university admission rate for candidates.
There is one more point I want to share, although candidates do not have to choose the admission method or combination, they must carefully study the admission plan of the university, of the major they want to be admitted to. Because schools must have admission by combination, method for which candidates have result data, then we can register. If candidates want to enter a school, but that unit does not consider admission based on the data the candidates have, it is also a wrong choice.
If candidates have participated in early admission and have been conditionally admitted to some universities, they still need to officially register their wishes on the Ministry of Education and Training's System. If they do not register, they will miss the opportunity because we have not been officially admitted.
When registering on the Ministry of Education and Training System, candidates will be admitted to only one and the highest choice according to their wishes and abilities. This means that candidates can be admitted early to 10 schools, but they can only study in 1 major, 1 school. The remaining 9 positions will be reserved for other candidates. This is also the way the system filters out the number of fake candidates and reserves positions for other candidates in the queue.
Because the system allows candidates to register, register additionally, and adjust their preferences an unlimited number of times, candidates still have the opportunity until the last minute, before 5:00 p.m. on July 30, to adjust their preferences.
PV: What are the common mistakes candidates make in choosing and registering for admission, madam?
Associate Professor, Dr. Nguyen Thu Thuy: Candidates may make mistakes when adjusting and arranging their admission wishes. The first mistake is technical, candidates forget to finish the adjustment process, leading to the system not recording. When candidates have finished adjusting, remember to "finish the process", use the "Complete" (submit) button so that the system can record the adjustments and changes that candidates have just made. Otherwise, candidates will miss the opportunity when there is a decisive change.
Second, sometimes candidates mistakenly think that when they have been admitted to an early admission option at a school, they are required to put their first choice. I would like to clarify that no school requires candidates to put their early admission option as their first choice. The option that candidates really love and want to be admitted to the most, regardless of the method, should be put first.
Early admission increases the candidates' chances, so that they can be assured that they have been admitted to that school and major. However, candidates still have another chance to be admitted to their favorite major, which is the higher wishes (first wish, second wish). In case they really love the major that they have been admitted to with conditions, then candidates can put this result on their first wish, and they will definitely be admitted to that wish.
Third, some candidates place too few preferences or concentrate their preferences on a group of "top" schools, so the risk will also be very high.
Another thing I want to remind candidates is that they should not put too many wishes. Candidates do not need to put hundreds of wishes to be admitted, instead they should divide their wishes into schools in different positions.
PV: Thank you very much!
