Shikizakura Cherry Blossom Festival
Why is it better to see cherry blossoms in autumn? In the cool weather, the mountainsides and lakes of Japan are brilliant with autumn colors, creating a beautiful natural picture that we often see on postcards. Among those brilliant colors are pale pink five-petal cherry blossoms that both contrast and compliment, making the autumn sky extremely cheerful. Only in Obara in autumn can you see this rare scene. Every year, Obara hosts the Shikizakura Festival in Fureai Park. The festival lasts throughout November. More than 300 rare cherry trees line the park’s paths. Take a stroll under the trees and take in the magical scenery. In addition to food stalls serving festival-goers, the park also hosts a variety of exciting entertainment activities, from taiko drumming to haiku poetry contests. (Photo: Club4traveler)
In Obara, if you don’t want to go to the park for the festival, you can go to Kawami Shikizakura no Sato to see thousands of cherry blossoms. This area is famous for its hillsides covered in gorgeous green, red, yellow, and pink in the fall. The road up the mountain is winding and steep. If you don’t like climbing, you can choose the flatter roads along the river. This area is quieter than the park, suitable for those who like tranquility. (Photo: Club4traveler)
Autumn Leaves Festival in Lake Kawaguchiko
Besides the cherry blossom festival in Obara, the autumn leaf festival in the Kawaguchiko Lake area, Yamanashi Prefecture is also worth experiencing once. Here, you can admire the Momiji Tunnel - the "maple leaf tunnel" on the lakeside, and see the white peak of Mount Fuji standing out among the bright red maple leaves. It is called a tunnel, but it is just the leaves intertwined above, forming an arch. Remember, if you want to see Mount Fuji against a clear sky, you must come here before 9am or in the late afternoon. (Photo: Phubet Juntarungsee)
The Autumn Leaves Festival is held in the Momiji Kairo area – the maple leaf corridor. Stretching about 2km on both sides of the canal are 60 maple trees. The two banks of the canal are decorated with the artist’s strokes. At night, the lights stay on until 10pm, giving the landscape a magical beauty that is completely different from daytime. In addition to taking pictures, you should go to the Kawaguchi area to experience fruit picking. This lake area is famous for fruits such as apples, strawberries, cherries, persimmons... Ripe red persimmons in late autumn are picked by hand to make dried persimmons "hoshigaki". People hang the ripe persimmons on a string. After three to five weeks, the persimmons will become sticky, with white sugar around them. At this point, cut the persimmons into pieces to eat, they will be chewy and sweet.
