Cappadocia is located in Central Turkey , is one of the famous wonders, recognized by UNESCO as a world natural heritage. Oil wrestling festival, officially known as Kirkpinar - a traditional Turkish sport dating back to 1346. The Kirkpinar Oil Wrestling Championship is a summer event held over several days (usually in late June or early July) in the city of Edirne, western Turkey.
In this wrestling festival, all wrestlers can participate regardless of region, religion, age, and are enthusiastically welcomed by the Turkish people. Participants will wear kispet, a traditional type of pants made from buffalo skin, and rub olive oil on their bodies.
The winner will receive the Kirkpinar gold belt, a handsome prize money and, perhaps most prestigiously, the title of “Başpehlivan” (Chief Wrestler). Before the match, the local authorities will organize a performance with 40 symphonies of Davuls and Zuma.
The Kirkpinar Festival is so attractive that it attracts millions of spectators, many of whom give up their jobs and time to travel thousands of kilometers to witness the fierce wrestling matches. Even the President of Türkiye has come to watch and award the champion of the festival.
