N NEW EXAM SUBJECTS
Dr. Nguyen Van Hieu, Director of the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Education and Training, said that the 10th grade entrance exam in 2025 will be kept stable with three subjects: literature, math and foreign language. However, the level of differentiation and innovation of the exam in each subject will be calculated and adjusted by the Department to suit teaching and learning in the direction of assessing students' abilities, closely following the goals of the 2018 General Education Program at the secondary level.
For the 10th grade specialized class, the Director of the Department of Education and Training of Ho Chi Minh City said that the Department's orientation is to replace specialized subjects in physics, chemistry, biology, history, and geography with specialized subjects in natural sciences, history and geography, in accordance with the 2018 General Education Program at the secondary level. However, at the high school level, there will be appropriate orientations for students to choose the right specialized subjects in physics, chemistry, biology, history, and geography according to the 2018 General Education Program at the high school level, associated with career orientation.
The head of the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Education and Training said that it is expected that around October, sample test questions for each entrance exam subject will be announced so that teachers and schools can have direction in innovating teaching and testing and assessment closely following the direction of assessing students' abilities.

D PLAN TO REDUCE MATH QUESTIONS, ADD KNOWLEDGE
Mr. Cao Duc Khoa, Principal of Huynh Khuong Ninh Secondary School (District 1), said that this year, for students of the 2018 General Education Program, the 10th grade entrance exam of Ho Chi Minh City is more closely following the orientation of practical application, encouraging and highly appreciating creative thinking, capacity and qualities.
However, according to Mr. Khoa, with literature, when studying and testing without using textbook materials, students need to find and choose works with similar topics and themes to create their own source of materials for their essays. The earlier and more carefully this preparation is done, the better the quality.
As for math, based on the direction of the Department of Education and Training as well as the content of the program, the head of the math group of a middle school in the central district said that students still need to review knowledge about graphs, equations, systems of equations, Viet's theorem, practical problems, and spatial geometry as before. However, this year's students need to prepare knowledge of probability and statistics because the new program has this content. "This is the content of math knowledge learned from grades 7 to 9, from basic to advanced levels. However, it will not be too difficult but will require students to understand the formulas and apply them to calculations," said the head of the group, adding that in a professional meeting, the Department of Education and Training of Ho Chi Minh City plans to compile this year's entrance exam with 7 questions (1 question less than the 10th grade entrance exam in 2024).
According to a math teacher in District 1, this year's 9th grade students have studied the 2018 General Education Program since grade 6, and have become familiar with integrating knowledge with practical application. After each chapter of knowledge, there are experiential activities for students to apply knowledge into practical calculations. Therefore, students need to pay attention to these experiential activities.

CHANGE THE WAY OF TEACHING AND LEARNING
According to the 2024-2025 school year schedule issued by the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee, the 10th grade entrance exam in 2025 will be held in June 2025.
Mr. Nguyen Anh Tuan, Principal of Le Van Tam Secondary School (Binh Thanh District), said that with such an exam schedule, the school has a plan that in mid-January 2025, when entering the second semester, teachers of exam subjects will proactively integrate teaching knowledge with reviewing and familiarizing students with the types of exercises and questions so that students have as much time as possible to get acquainted.
At the same time, based on the results of the 10th grade exam in 2024, the Principal of Le Van Tam Secondary School also required teachers and students to change their learning methods and prepare knowledge for the 10th grade exam in 2025, with special emphasis on math. Mr. Tuan said that students should not learn math mechanically and in a stereotyped way like in previous school years. Teachers must also radically change their teaching methods for students.
At Ha Huy Tap Secondary School (Binh Thanh District), Ms. Hua Thi Diem Tram, the school's principal, said that although the 9th grade teachers selected by the school are "veteran" teachers with experience in reviewing for the 10th grade exam, they still remind teachers not to be subjective with this year's students. According to Ms. Tram, this year is the first year of the entrance exam according to the new program, students certainly cannot avoid anxiety and pressure. Therefore, it requires teachers in charge of the exam subjects to grasp accurately, identify the target students to supplement, consolidate or improve in the most appropriate way.
Mr. Tran Tuan Anh, Thu Duc High School (HCMC), also emphasized that teachers and students need to change in teaching and learning. First of all, change the way of thinking. Familiar math knowledge such as transforming expressions, calculating expression values, solving equations, solving inequalities, proving... is not the ultimate goal of learning math. It is only a powerful tool for solving practical problems.
Therefore, avoid teaching by rote the types of exercises that clearly define the steps for students to memorize. This limits their creative freedom, restricts their thinking, and makes them confused when encountering "strange" types of math.
According to Mr. Tuan Anh, it is necessary to increase students' reading comprehension ability in understanding math problems, understanding and summarizing hypotheses, understanding math problem requirements... by providing vocabulary about practical fields such as finance, statistics... Interspersed in the lesson are practical, familiar examples. Students must also learn by nature, understand the definitions and concepts of mathematical objects to use in solving math problems... Avoid the situation of memorizing formulas without knowing how to use them.
Don't let STUDENTS comment "this is the first time I've seen a test like this"
At the conference to deploy tasks for the 2024-2025 school year, mentioning the preparation for the high school entrance exam, Mr. Nguyen Van Hieu, Director of the Department of Education and Training of Ho Chi Minh City, emphasized that the entrance exam for grade 10 based on assessing students' abilities is not new to Ho Chi Minh City because over the past 10 years, from 2014 to present, Ho Chi Minh City has consistently implemented this goal.
In the 10th grade entrance exam for the 2025-2026 school year, the Department of Education and Training will continue to resolutely innovate the exam questions according to the orientation of assessing students' abilities. However, this will be more clearly demonstrated by Ho Chi Minh City, in accordance with the orientation of the 2018 General Education Program.
Mr. Hieu said that in the new school year, the Department of Education and Training will strengthen the direction of teaching, testing and assessment at the secondary level, ensuring consistency and compliance with the objectives of the 2018 General Education Program. In particular, the Department will compare and evaluate the output at the secondary level according to the requirements of the 2018 General Education Program. At the end of grade 9, in each subject, students will achieve the requirements set by the new program.
"Right in the first semester, the Department will organize inspection teams to inspect the actual process of teaching innovation and assessment in secondary schools. The Department's leaders will work with professional departments to grasp, inspect, review, and re-evaluate the teaching process of the schools closely. In the process of building the assessment matrix for each subject in the school year, teachers must fully control the competencies that need to be achieved according to the requirements of the 2018 General Education Program. Absolutely do not let the situation happen where students, when faced with a competency assessment test, comment: "This is the first time I've seen a test like this", Mr. Hieu emphasized.
