A Thu, a Gie-Trieng (9th grade student, Dak Duc Primary and Secondary School, Dak Duc Commune, Ngoc Hoi District, Kon Tum) was born into a poor family. His family had a few acres of land for production, so his parents had to work for hire to support the life of four people.

Not wanting to be haunted by poverty in the future, A Thu realized the importance of studying and tried to improve his knowledge. With difficult exercises, A Thu asked his teachers for more guidance to master the knowledge. Outside of class, A Thu helped his parents with housework, herded cows or worked for hire.
