Aftershocks continued to shake Ishikawa prefecture and surrounding areas a day after a magnitude 7.6 earthquake struck the area on Monday afternoon.

Japanese officials said 48 people were confirmed dead in Ishikawa. They said 17 others were seriously injured, and damage to homes was too extensive to immediately assess. Here are some terrifying images of the quake:
