Aftershocks continued to shake Ishikawa Prefecture and surrounding areas a day after a powerful 7.6 magnitude earthquake struck the region on Monday afternoon.

Japanese officials said 48 people have been confirmed dead in Ishikawa. They said 17 others were seriously injured, and the damage to homes was too extensive to assess immediately. Here are some terrifying images of the earthquake:
