Before becoming a provincial-level traditional craft, tailoring in Hoi An had already left a lasting impression on many people. In a land that once played a crucial role on the "Silk Road," a stopover for large merchant ships in the 16th and 17th centuries, there was also a strong development of suitable forms of trade and services.
At the beginning of the 20th century, tailor shops specializing in Western-style clothing first appeared in Hoi An. In 2006, tailoring was recognized as one of Hoi An's 50 official tourism products at the first National Tourism Year hosted by Quang Nam province. Also in that year, Hoi An was honored by Time magazine as one of the places with the fastest and cheapest tailoring services in the world, offering a wide variety of styles.
Mr. Le Dinh Thanh, who has spent over 30 years in the tailoring profession, said that the development of tourism has caused the traditional tailoring trade in Hoi An to shift. Tourism has led to the emergence of "express tailoring shops" – serving tourists who want clothes made on the same day.
The tailor shops in Hoi An have also welcomed politicians and artists from both Vietnam and abroad who came to experience and use their services. The stitches of the Hoi An tailors are not only special because of their exquisite craftsmanship, but also because the dedication of the artisans is evident in the garments they create. Each tailor has a story to tell. Each tailor shop represents a journey through the memories of this land.
