Thousand-year-old "divine trees" protected by the K'Ho Cil people

(Dan Tri) - On the top of Biduop - Nui Ba, many thousand-year-old "divine trees" are respected and protected by the K'Ho Cil people. The locals often hug the trees and pray for blessings.

At the beginning of the new year, Mr. Du Na, a K'Ho Cil ethnic group (35 years old, residing in Da Chais commune, Lac Duong district, Lam Dong) coordinated with the rangers of Bidoup - Nui Ba National Park to conduct a patrol to protect the forest.

When arriving at the forest area bordering Lam Dong and Khanh Hoa provinces, Du Na walked up to the ancient tree and opened his arms to hug the "divine tree" tightly.

Pressing his head against the tree trunk and closing his eyes, Du Na muttered a prayer, asking the "tree god" to grant him health and luck.

Mr. Du Na said that when he grew up, he heard the elders in the village tell him about the sacred forest, about the thousand-year-old "divine trees". Those are the flat-leafed pine trees, an endemic species distributed in Bidoup - Nui Ba National Park.

Mr. Du Na said: "The elders in the village say that the thousand-year-old flat-leaf pine trees are the residence of the gods, and no one is allowed to violate them. Those with bad intentions who violate the residence of the gods will be punished. On the contrary, those who are sincere, respectful, and protect the trees will be blessed."

Mr. Pang Tiang Min, a ranger at Hon Giao Forest Ranger Station, Bidoup - Nui Ba National Park Ranger Department, said that thousand-year-old flat-leaf pine trees are distributed over large forest areas. The number of trees in the area managed by the unit is up to thousands of roots, including trees over 1,000 years old.

"We have numbered all the flat-leaf pine trees to monitor, manage and protect them. The ancient pine trees are considered "divine" by the locals and no one dares to encroach on them," said Mr. Pang Tiang Min.

According to Mr. Pang Tiang Min, the population of "divine trees" is distributed in forest areas at an altitude of over 2,000m above sea level. This is a forest area where fog often appears and has biological diversity.

Due to high humidity, the trunk of the flat-leaf pine is covered with moss and orchids. The soil under the tree has a layer of humus about 1m thick, helping to retain moisture and provide nutrients for the tree to grow and develop.

It is known that the scientific name of the Pinus Krempfii is Pinus Krempfii and this plant species is very rare in the world. In Vietnam, the Pinus Krempfii has been found in some places such as Chu Yang Sin National Park (Dak Lak), Phuoc Binh National Park (Ninh Thuan).

However, the most widespread distribution of the flat-leaf pine is recorded in Bidoup - Nui Ba National Park with two large populations. These include the Heaven's Gate forest area (under the administrative boundary of Dam Rong district, Lam Dong) and the forest area in Lac Duong district managed by the Hon Giao Forest Ranger Station.

Mr. Nguyen Luong Minh, Deputy Director of Bidoup - Nui Ba National Park, said that using modern methods, scientists have determined that many flat-leaf pine trees in Bidoup - Nui Ba National Park are between 700 and 1,100 years old.

Currently, Bidoup - Nui Ba National Park also organizes outdoor tours to two "divine tree" populations for locals and tourists to experience, explore and research.
