From a number of small-scale traditional industries, Binh Thuan industry has shown remarkable progress and gradually affirmed itself as one of the three economic pillars of the locality...
After the complete liberation of the South and the reunification of the country (1975), the province recorded about 500 industrial and handicraft production establishments, mainly concentrated in traditional industries: fish sauce production, ice, wood sawing, shipbuilding and repair, car repair... However, at that time, most of the establishments operated on a family scale of "father to son", using outdated equipment and not attracting many workers. As for the situation of electricity production, it was even more difficult due to the impact of the siege and economic embargo, so the electricity output was not enough to serve the production and daily life of the people.
Since the separation of the province in 1992 until now, Binh Thuan industry has focused on investment and development to effectively exploit the potentials and advantages of the southernmost coastal province of the Central region. At the same time, the specialized Resolutions on industrial and handicraft development (now industrial development) issued by the Provincial Party Committee have oriented the industry to grow strongly. Accordingly, the internal structure of the industry has changed in a positive direction, especially the rapid increase in the proportion of electricity production and the processing and manufacturing industry has maintained a leading position in the local industry. In addition to processing agricultural and seafood products, the local industry has also formed a number of new products: wooden furniture, high-quality adhesive paper, garments, titanium mineral processing, etc.
In recent times, the province has established 9 industrial parks (IPs) and currently there are 7 IPs promoting investment in infrastructure construction, including: Phan Thiet IP Phase 1, Phan Thiet IP Phase 2, Ham Kiem I IP, Ham Kiem II IP, Song Binh IP, Tuy Phong IP, Tan Duc IP. The remaining Son My 1 IP and Son My 2 IP are in the investment preparation stage, implementing compensation, site clearance, land lease procedures, etc. By the end of last year, IPs with infrastructure investment had attracted 89 secondary projects with a total registered capital of nearly 16,825 billion VND and over 293 million USD, of which 65 projects have gone into production and business, creating jobs for more than 10,000 workers. That does not include 3 projects (thermal power plant and LNG port warehouse) in Son My 1 Industrial Park with a total registered capital of up to 5.4 billion USD that have been approved for investment but have not yet been leased land. In addition, with 15 industrial clusters that have invested and are building infrastructure in the locality, up to now, they have attracted nearly 180 projects, thereby contributing to creating jobs for about 13,000 workers.
Especially in the field of energy, if in 1992 the whole province had less than half of the communes - wards - towns with 35% of the total number of households using electricity, now Binh Thuan has shown the appearance of a national energy center. According to the Department of Industry and Trade, the whole province currently has 47 power plants in operation, including 4 thermal power plants, 7 hydropower plants, 1 diesel power plant, 9 wind power plants, 26 solar power plants with a total capacity of 6,523.21 MW. Thanks to that, Binh Thuan not only provides enough electricity to serve the socio-economic development of the locality (including Phu Quy island district) but also contributes to ensuring energy security for the key economic region in the South...
With strong progress, Binh Thuan industry is also aiming to become a pillar and create an important driving force to promote sustainable economic development as expected by the locality. It is believed that in the coming time, this economic pillar will continue to achieve new achievements, especially in potential fields such as: Processing and manufacturing industry; Energy and electricity industry (onshore wind power, offshore wind power and hydrogen, solar power, LNG gas power ...).
