The AI Works engineering team is researching and applying artificial intelligence (AI) tools to develop products for the oil and gas industry.

AI Works Artificial Intelligence Solutions Joint Stock Company, a startup affiliated with the Vietnam Petroleum Institute (VPI), is researching and applying artificial intelligence (AI) tools in the fields of scientific research, application and training.

One of AI Works' key products is iLab - an experimental design tool that uses machine learning and artificial intelligence (AI/ML) to help scientists optimize experimental processes.

Sharing about the applicability of iLab in the oil and gas sector and product development orientation, Mr. Le Ngoc Anh - VPI Data Director, Chairman of AI Works Board of Directors said that iLab is designed to combine the Design of Experiments (DoE) method with artificial intelligence (AI). The goal is to improve the product research and development process through the use of historical data and related documents.

iLab is capable of predicting results with good accuracy, managing historical data and optimizing experimental procedures. Instead of performing all experiments according to the traditional plan, when using iLab, users only need to conduct the first few experiments. Then iLab will support and suggest parameters for the next experiments to achieve the final results faster.

This product helps researchers save time, resources and provides analysis of the relationship between experimental components. Saving experimental input resources helps reduce implementation costs, reduce the pressure of waste treatment after the experiment, contributing to environmental protection.

"In the oil and gas industry, iLab can support many aspects. For example, in the field of chemistry and materials, iLab can help researchers and engineers optimize the process of developing new materials. The product has the ability to predict and optimize the composition of compounds, helping to save time and costs in research" - Mr. Le Ngoc Anh said.

In addition, iLab can also help optimize production processes and quality control in refineries. By analyzing historical data and applying AI algorithms, iLab can recommend adjustments to improve production efficiency and ensure product quality.

According to Mr. Le Ngoc Anh, iLab combines design of experiments (DoE), artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning models to bring many benefits in optimizing experimental processes. First of all, iLab helps increase efficiency by optimizing experimental design, helping to reduce the number of experiments that need to be performed.

Furthermore, AI and machine learning models are used to analyze data, identify relationships between factors that influence experimental results. iLab also automates some stages in the experimental process, helping users reduce effort and time.

Mr. Le Ngoc Anh cited a specific example: "Recently, AI Works applied iLab in a research project on developing additives for lubricants. This process usually requires hundreds of different experiments. With the support of iLab, we have reduced the number of necessary experiments by about 70%. The system analyzes historical data from previous studies, combined with new input parameters to suggest experimental combinations with optimal potential."

As a result, the company saved about 40% of research time and significantly reduced the amount of raw materials used. This not only saved costs but also contributed to environmental protection by reducing waste.

Regarding the plan to develop new features for iLab, Mr. Le Ngoc Anh informed that the Vietnam Petroleum Institute and AI Works plan to integrate with large language models such as ChatGPT to create a more friendly interface where users can interact in natural language.

We are exploring the possibility of extending iLab to automate some of the testing processes, including direct connection to testing equipment to collect real-time data and make timely adjustments. In addition, we are also developing specialized modules for specific areas in the oil and gas industry such as geological analysis, drilling processes, or production management.

During the development and refinement of the product, the team faced several key challenges. First, integrating AI and machine learning algorithms into the traditional design of experiments process, while ensuring that the predictions and recommendations were realistic.

In addition, the team also faced difficulties in building a user-friendly interface while still ensuring high technical expertise. Finally, an equally important challenge was the issue of security and safe data management when working with sensitive information.

Mr. Le Ngoc Anh commented that AI is changing the way scientific research is conducted. With the ability to process large amounts of data, AI helps scientists speed up the research process and find new directions.

Sharing with young people who want to participate in this new field, Mr. Le Ngoc Anh said that it is necessary to equip them with basic knowledge about the oil and gas industry, regularly update their knowledge about AI and machine learning, and apply AI to real projects. AI is a supporting tool, not a complete replacement for humans. Young people need to develop analytical skills and critical thinking in parallel with learning about AI.

"Combining experience in the oil and gas industry with AI technology will create useful improvements. AI Works and iLab are the first efforts, and we look forward to contributing to the development of Vietnam's oil and gas industry," said Mr. Le Ngoc Anh.
