Looking back at a year of Vietnam's comprehensive strategic partnership

On September 10, 2023, Vietnam and the United States upgraded their bilateral relationship to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership during President Joe Biden's State visit to Vietnam.

Mr. Ted Oisus - Chairman of the US-ASEAN Business Council said that economic and trade cooperation between the two countries is developing very positively. Vietnam is one of the largest trade partners of the United States. In recent times, there have been more than 30,000 Vietnamese students studying in the United States and vice versa. These results will develop even better, because 2025 is the 30th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Vietnam and the United States; the 50th anniversary of Vietnam's independence... Therefore, the two countries need to promote cooperation in every possible field.

In particular, after a year of upgrading bilateral relations to Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, Vietnam and the United States have had many delegations exchanging investment cooperation and the frequency of visits to each other is at its highest. US businesses are increasingly interested in the Vietnamese market. The upgrade to Comprehensive Strategic Partnership has increased trust and added depth to the relationship, and businesses and people of the two countries continue to benefit from this decision.

"I am really excited about the Vietnam - US relationship, especially when the two countries upgrade diplomatic relations to the highest level in 2023, which opens up opportunities for business connections between the two countries. Currently, the Asian American Business Council as well as insurance companies are looking for connections and suitable cooperation opportunities in the fields of automobiles and energy..." - Mr. Kishan Alexander - Vice President of the Asian American Business Council (AACC) shared.

Similarly, Vietnamese Ambassador to the United States Nguyen Quoc Dung also commented that upgrading Vietnam-US relations is an absolutely correct decision, both recognizing the remarkable progress in economic relations between the two countries in recent times and serving as a driving force to continue strengthening trust and excitement in the Vietnamese and US business communities.

"From a local perspective, I see the momentum coming from the great commitment and determination of the senior leaders, the Government, ministries, branches and localities of the two countries in implementing high-level agreements, creating opportunities to connect the business community, being ready to dialogue, listen to remove difficulties and obstacles" - Ambassador Nguyen Quoc Dung acknowledged and said that currently, businesses of the two countries are very interested and eager to expand trade exchanges and increase investment, explore cooperation possibilities in new fields such as artificial intelligence, semiconductors, renewable energy, high-tech agriculture, transportation...

Regarding this issue, US Ambassador to Vietnam Marc Knapper also said that, along with upgrading the relationship to the level of Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, we have put the future, prosperity and security of the two countries together.

"Our success is your success, and Vietnam's success is our success. We have come a long way together, and there is still a future ahead. There is still much we can do together, for the goal of peace, stability, and prosperity of the two countries and the whole region" - Ambassador Marc Knapper shared.

Looking ahead, Ambassador Marc Knapper said that cooperation in all areas, from diplomacy, trade exchanges, to climate, energy, education, and health will continue to be further promoted. Especially in the fields of semiconductor technology and education and training. US technology companies are investing more in the Vietnamese market, contributing to the completion of the high-tech and semiconductor technology ecosystem. Meanwhile, the Vietnamese Government is also making great efforts to ensure a fair and transparent business environment and access to clean and sustainable energy sources.

Recently, sharing with the press about the Vietnam - US relationship after one year of implementing the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Bui Thanh Son emphasized that cooperation between the two countries has achieved many positive results in a number of areas:

Firstly , contacts and delegation exchanges have been taking place actively at all channels and levels. In addition to maintaining existing annual dialogue mechanisms, the two sides have successfully launched new annual dialogue mechanisms such as the Foreign Ministers' Dialogue, Economic Dialogue and Security and Law Enforcement Dialogue. Thereby, concretizing the commitments of the two sides in the 2023 Joint Statement.

Second, economy - trade - investment continues to be an important driving force for bilateral relations. Bilateral trade turnover in the first 8 months of 2024 reached nearly 88 billion USD, up 22%. Many large enterprises of the two countries are actively expanding investment in each other's markets, creating a strong intertwined interest.

Third, security and defense cooperation continues to be effectively implemented, in which cooperation in overcoming war consequences continues to be a priority and an important pillar in the bilateral relationship, achieving many substantive results; security and law enforcement cooperation is increasingly strengthened...

Fourth, the two sides continue to coordinate closely at important multilateral mechanisms and forums as well as substantive cooperation to respond to global issues.

In addition, on issues that remain different, the two sides will continue to strengthen dialogue in a frank and constructive spirit and pay attention to each other's legitimate interests.
