Drink sugarcane juice, bell pepper juice to lose weight
TA, 30 years old, in Hanoi, wanted to lose weight so she looked into quick weight loss methods. She saw many people instructing her to drink sugarcane juice, combined with bell pepper juice and lemon juice. After 12 days of struggling, she lost 4 kg. However, TA felt very tired, had a stomachache and craved food during the weight loss period. After losing 4 kg, she did not dare to apply this method anymore.
Similarly, VXM, 29 years old, in Ho Chi Minh City, also tried to drink sugarcane juice mixed with bell peppers to lose weight. "Before every meal, I drink a big glass of sugarcane juice mixed with bell peppers. After drinking it, I feel full so I eat very little rice. After about 2 weeks, I lost 3-4 kg but then my weight increased again so I had to find another method," said Ms. M.
Or like NT (31 years old, in Thu Duc City, Ho Chi Minh City) said that after giving birth, she became fat and had a lot of excess fat in her belly, so she wanted to lose weight quickly. During the weight loss period, she often drank sugarcane juice instead of main meals, and cut down on the amount of rice consumed during the day. However, after only a few days, she gave up because she was too tired and stressed.
When is obesity considered and weight loss is needed?
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), obesity is a chronic disease that affects children as well as adults. Obesity is one of the most prominent but often overlooked public health problems.
Obesity is on the rise in modern society.
According to Associate Professor, Dr. Lam Vinh Nien, Head of the Department of Nutrition - Dietetics, University of Medicine and Pharmacy Hospital, Ho Chi Minh City, to determine whether a person is obese or overweight, it is necessary to consider a number of indicators such as BMI, waist measurement, body fat ratio... When one of these factors exceeds the threshold, it is determined to be overweight.
Body mass index (BMI) is calculated by dividing weight by height squared. According to the classification of the Asian Diabetes Association (IDI & WPRO), the BMI of Asians from 18.50 - 22.9 kg/ m2 is normal weight. BMI below 18.5 is underweight, from 23 - 24.9 is overweight and from 25 and above is obese.
However, in some cases, the BMI index may not fully reflect the condition, we can measure the amount of fat on the body, measure the waist index. If the waist index is over 80 cm for women and over 90 cm for men, it shows abdominal obesity, overweight, and requires a suitable weight loss plan.
It's not just about comparing before and after weights.
According to MSc. Nguyen Viet Quynh Thu, Head of Nutrition and Dietetics Department - FV Hospital, successful weight loss is not simply a matter of comparing weight before and after weight loss.
Successful weight loss is not simply comparing your weight before and after losing weight.
"When you lose weight properly and scientifically, you will lose fat. But when you lose weight incorrectly, you will not lose fat but lose muscle. Therefore, if you weigh 50 kg today and then weigh 45 kg a few days later, you will not lose weight. Losing weight quickly in a short period of time by methods such as fasting, drinking sugarcane juice... will weaken the body, dehydrate, and destroy muscle, leaving many serious consequences for health later on," Dr. Thu shared.
According to Dr. Thu, cases of rapid weight loss cause dehydration and metabolic disorders. When eating normally again, weight will be gained quickly, even fatter than before.
To lose weight effectively, the basic principle is that the amount of calories consumed must be lower than the amount of calories consumed. When there is a calorie deficit, combined with reasonable exercise will help burn fat effectively. Therefore, before losing weight, patients are often measured for body fat index to compare with the results later.
